First a little about myself, Im in my middle 30's and from the time i have been out of highschool i have been gaining weight every year. I am determined to be healthy and live a healthier life. i work in health care so i know what a strain being unhealthy can do even at a young age. I see people come in at 35 years old having heart attacks. I am pretty self motivated, but at the moment very discouraged because i have only lost 4/5 lbs in 2 months and im not sure what im doing wrong.

I have been doing MFP pretty hard for 2 months. I occasionally on the weekends forget to log but other than that have been regular. Exercising regular, i have a membership at the gym and exercise anywhere from 4-6 days a week. I also have a tredmill at home so when im not at the gym im on there walking 3 miles.

I was only trying to consume 1200 cal a day plus exercising i was thinking if i created such a deficit then maybe i would see good results. But im barely seeing any. Occasionally i will go over 1200 but not by much. Any advice on how i need to plan menus? or books i need to get on what is appropriate foods to eat....carbs fats to take in im just not sure if im doing this correctly and i refuse to do those yo yo fad diets.

Meal planning is the absolute best thing you can do. I have found that taking my lunch to work has helped me stay on track as well as counting calories. Take the time to prep meals and stay away from fast food. I know it is time consuming and tedious but it is worth every second. I moderate a group called One Day at a Time where myself and other members can give you all the advice and motivation that you can handle. We do daily chat threads, weekly workout challenges as well as weekly weigh-in. We all have our ups and downs and lose motivation but having others to help through the day to day struggles will be beneficial. Feel free to send me a friend request as well as look up the group.

  • Thanks, I appreciate the advice!
  • Hi there, this will sound silly, but you need to eat more. If you only eat 1200 calories and exercise, your net calories will be less than 1200 and your body is going into starvation mode (your metabolism slows down and your weight doesn't budge.)
Also, depending on the exercise you are doing, your muscle/fat ratio may well be shifting (muscle weighs more than fat) so make sure you also take your measurements as you may notice your size decreasing despite a 'stuck' set of scales.
ALso, if you lose weight too quickly, you are more likely to gain it back even quicker.
SLow and steady, and embrace this as a life changing journey and nutritional education to reap long lasting benefits.
    Good luck :)

I agree that you are not eating enough, and probably not regularly enough, which is my problem. I've only been using this site for 1 month, and I have only lost 1lb!! I'm struggling, but I tend to like 2 big meals daily. I'm a nurse, and I know that if I split my cals up into 3 medium meals and 2 snacks daily, I would do a lot better!! I know it all depends on how tall you are and how much you weigh to start off with, but I think you shouldn't have less than 1,500 cals daily to be healthy, and for your body not to go into starvation mode. Eating every 3-4hrs will also keep your metabolism revved up......if only I could listen to my own advice!!!
