Does my body know

When I exercise and when I eat? I feel like I'm getting into a plateau and would like to change up my routine. I usually work out 5 days in a row with 2 days off. If I switch it to maybe every other day or something along the lines of that, would my body notice the change in routine?

  • Yes, if you continue doing the same routine your body gets accustomed. You want to change your excercise habits regulating so you work different elements of your body and maintain a good workout. Say Monday do only cardio, tues rest, wed weight training, thirst rest, Fri circut traing or go running, sat off and Sunday do yoga. And keep changing it up and try new workouts. See if that helps.
  • My suggestion would for you to change your workout routine. Your body is getting use to what you are doing, so it's important that you change up what you are doing to "shock" your body. This could be as simple as doing different exercises. Instead of running/walking on flat land, try and run/walk up hills. Or if you are weight training, switch up the way you are training (circuit, push/pull, etc.).

You should vary your type (and I don't just mean cardio vs. strength training) - specifics like 'which chest/tricep exercises" or "running at constant pace, versus interval training" will make a big difference.

**EDIT - as the others have said above, the "timing" of the workout won't affect your losses. But the change in style definitely can help. I'd like to add that if you've only been here a month - it is not a plateau... you should make sure you are eating enough to fuel those workouts. Based on your diary, I see you net ~1000 calories most days - that is simply not enough for healthy, sustained loss.

Your body definitely knows! Mess with it every couple of weeks by changing things up.

I love going to Turbo Kickboxing classes but I realized I go to the same instructor every time and I started to anticipate each move before it happened. I didn't have to work as hard. Yesterday I went to a new instructor and WOW, I was sweating so much more because I was not only trying to keep up with a new routine but also she made us work harder with sprinting and such. I think I'll alternate between instructors from now on, just to keep it interesting!

    Good luck! :drinker:
  • So would it help if I turned the resistancy from 3 to 4? Or cycled 5 minutes longer?

If you are only doing cardio, and not strength training, that would increase intensity in the workout (and should therefore increase your caloric burn). Are you wearing a HRM to get readings on your burns?

I'd like to add that cardio, while it certainly has its benefits, should be mixed with strength training to maximize your loss from fat instead of lean muscle.

Oh, and I know I said it earlier, but I want to reiterate (even though it looks funny) - you should really be eating more so that you are netting at least 1200 calories each day... (and that will mean eating back some, if not all, of the calories you burn through exercise).

**EDIT - I realize most people think "I'm working out to burn more calories and lose weight" but you are in fact depriving your body of the fuel (nutrients) it needs by limiting yourself in that capacity. it may be why your weight loss has gradually lessened instead of remaining consistent

    It might.

But I suggest once or twice a week, doing something other than cycling. Do you workout at the gym? If you use the higher bikes, try the one that has you closer to the ground. Jump on the rowing machine. Take a swim in the pool. Grab a jump rope and see how long you can go for. Get on the stairs machine and see how many flights you can climb.

I say once a week do something you've never done before.

Variety is the spice of life. This definitely helps keep people going! :drinker:
  • Yes, my stationary bike has a HRM built in and I usually do 10-15 minutes of strength training every other day. I just find it really hard to eat my calories because of my exercise calories but I'm trying to do it.

I'm going to work out Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Break Wed, Thursday, Friday, Sat break.

    Also, I workout at home.
