I'm doing my first 1/2 in June I definitely plan to rest on Saturday. As far as the nerves go I think everyone experiences them to a certain degree. All I can recommend is to try to go into it with the idea of having a fun day. Take it easy at the start of the race, pace yourself and enjoy the experience. Good Luck and have FUN.
  • Just tough thing.. just started running last year.. couldn't even run a mile!!

Taper your runs down towards the big day, do not run the day before.

Load up on carbs the night before your race, ensure you keep hydrated and get a good night's sleep on the night prior to the race.

    Enjoy!!!

Go to amateurendurance.com. They have some good training programs for all distances that are designed for new runners to intermediate runners that may answer your questions for the days leading up to the run. As for nerves I would focus on keeping your routine of diet and gear the same with no changes. What I mean is do not change socks on race day or change food, etc. as that could throw off your system. I am in the process of training for my first marathon and understand your nervousness. Best of luck to you on race day and have fun knowing that you are doing it. This first race will give your first Personal Best to beat next time!

I did my first half last Nov, started running last April.

My advice...Gu! Or something like it at least once during the race, try it on a practice run to see what works for you. Walk through the aide stations. Don't listen to music, focus on what you're doing and enjoy yourself. Don't take ibproufin within 48 hours of the race. Water and/or gatoraide afterwards. Stretch or foam roll that night.

Just do it! Don't be afraid to pace yourself, ignore the people passing you. I just ran my first and made a deal I would walk at every water station. This got me through the race just fine. It's very exciting!

I finished in 2 hours 33 minutes, which included me having to stop at mile 4 and wait for the bathroom. Next time, I hope to do 2:20, but really, finishing is such a good accomplishment regardless of the time.
