Just wanted to share with you the pure brilliance of my new obsession with plantain chips!

I am a chip addict, it's my number one weakness and I could probably eat them all day every day!
These plantain chips taste exactly like a potato chip, seriously. Plus are pretty darn healthy!
One serving is an ounce which is about 20 chips! ( these are from Trader Joe's)

  • Oh those do sound yummy! I'm at the point though where I just need to eat foods that aren't trigger foods right now, because if not this will just make me fall off the bandwagon.

I love plantain chips too! Are you sure it has no sugar? Cos I know plantains have sugar in them. Natural ones of course.
  • sounds so good. I wish I lived near a TJ's, but I've recently moved to the boonies - no TJ, no whole foods, only walmart and P&C. I will have to stock up the next time I'm in a major city.

I wonder if I could make some at home though....

I actually wondered the same thing myself, so I did some research online and everything said no sugar in the chips, only in the plantain fruit itself. I'll take it!

Well something is deceiving in the packaging then, because plaintains do have natural sugars and frying them is going to intensify them, essentially making them higher in sugar due to the cooking process............

If the sugars say 0, something is deceiving because they have to count the natural sugars in the plantain itself. It is not possible for plantain to have 0 sugars...................

The glycemic index on plantains are the same as white sugar (table sugar) which is a 70 and is HIGH.............not much different from eating a potato.
  • I love, love, love these too! I can't eat gluten so I use them like crackers. In fact I'm eating some right now with cheese!

As far as the sugar issue goes, there are several ways that plantains are eaten--green, yellow and black. When yellow or black they are very sweet. When still green they are more starchy, like a potato. Like with bananas, the complex starches break down into simple sugars as they ripen. Since they aren't at all sweet, I'm pretty positive that plantain chips are made from green plantains. Add that to the fact that a medium plantain is close to 200g and only contains 8g of sugar and you can see why such a small serving of plantain chips (28g) doesn't contain a measurable amount of sugar.

From what I found there is about 10 grams of sugar in a medium plantain................
One medium plantain, which is the common serving of the fruit, contains 220 calories, which is roughly the same as a banana of the same size, if not slightly less. It also contains 57 grams of carbohydrates and 10 grams of sugar, which is significantly more than bananas. Certain types of more bland plantains, the ones not used for cooking, may contain less sugar than a common banana.

Well the amount of sugar will surely vary depending on the size of the fruit. But I think you can still follow my logic...

In a way, yes I follow the logic, but that is why I don't purchase any processed or already cooked foods, even from stores like Trader Joe's.

American labelling (FDA, USDA, etc) allows them to LIE to people saying it has 0 grams of sugar, when in fact it does not............

And since the ingredients indicate Palm Oil, they are the fried variety that increases the sugar grams, so there should be at least 1-2 grams of sugar listed in the nutritional information. So, the packaging is very, very misleading.

That is all I was saying. :flowerforyou:
