Hi

What about working around the house ie vacumming, washing cupboards/walls, floors, doing laundry. Does any of this count towards exercise. I know I work up a huge sweat when I do clean

  • Doing most anything does burn more calories than just sitting idle, but I would consider "exercise" more than just breaking a sweat. Even something as simple as going for walks where you can get your heart rate up to a good pace and keep it there for a while is a great exercise.

I don't count housework as exercise. For me it is part of my normal daily activies, not something extra.

If you want to know what you burn when you clean, you can find out. In the exercise box, type in cleaning…. the thing about it though, is it's a bit open to interpretation. See, I wouldn't consider laundry as doing much, because i sit on the couch in front of the TV while folding it.

I think this varies from person to person and what your MFP goals are.

I believe that some people use MFP to help them be accountable, and keep good records of anything and everything. If it helps you to log that information to stay on track, i say log it. It is your diary, regardless of what others think is right or wrong.

Personally, if I weren't raising my heart rate, and maintaining it, I would count those calories as something I would consider eating back, but for good recordkeeping - Yep, I've logged short dog walks before, so I can remember what my day was like when I look back.

    To each there own.

I see people count it as exercise all the time. Personally, I do not count it. I have a theory that people who are counting everything as exercise tend to over estimate their calories burned, which on MFP, ends up resulting in extra food calories. If you eat back your exercise calories this can be a trap that causes little or no weight loss. I say count only the real exercises and leave the day to day chores out.
