    My favorite...

    Fresh Mozzarella-Tomato-Basil Salad

    • 1/2 pound fresh mozzarella cheese <----Fat free or low fat..

    • 3 medium tomatoes, sliced

    • 1/2 teaspoon salt

    • 1/4 teaspoon pepper

    • 3 tablespoons olive oil

    • 1/2 cup chopped fresh basil leaves

Remove cheese from brine, and cut into 16 thin slices; sprinkle tomato slices evenly with salt and pepper. Alternate tomato and cheese slices on a serving platter; drizzle with olive oil. Cover and chill 4 hours. Just before serving, sprinkle with chopped basil. Makes 8 servings.

I noticed at the grocery a few weeks ago that a basil plant was the same price as a bag of basil and it had the same amount of herb. I figured I would try it.

Well I have used it just about each day, and it is growing new leaves! I love the taste of fresh basil.

Once I just squeezed the leaf and my hands had the most love aroma!!

    Mmmmm :drinker:

My new leaves are smaller.......but figure it is because I keep ripping them off!!

I did learn from a gardner to pinch the leaves, don't cut the stems.

I water ever other day or so to keep the soil moist and there are plenty of products to fertilize them.

I THINK I GOING TO BUY ANOTHER PLANT.
  • The way I care for my basil plant - and this seems to encourage it to make more and more leaves - is to snip the stem right below the second "pair" of leaves from the end of the shoot. By "pair," I mean a set of two leaves that are at the same point on the shoot. So I might be snipping off a 4-inch shoot that has like 10 leaves on it. I usually will snip 3 or 4 shoots off once every week or two. This encourages it to become more bushy. My basil plant is a Lemon Basil plant, so the leaves are about 1-2 inches long and .5 inch across - not very big. I have also read that you should not let the plant flower because a lot of the nutrients and flavors go into the flowers instead of the leaves once it blooms. My plant has flowered, but I don't care, I'm still eating the leaves.

I hate to be a party pooper, too, but calcitriol does not cause fat storage (that I am aware of) It works in the bone to increase free calcium in the blood and increases intestinal absorption of calcium. I know this probably has nothing to do with what this topic is about, but as a med student I had to clarify! Wouldn't want you guys running around dissing poor ole calcitriol!

You are not a party pooper, you are a voice of reason. Given our obsessions with food and weight, does anyone seriously think that if there was some pill or herb or particular food that worked for everyone, that it wouldn't be trumpeted from every rooftop so that everyone in America knew it? Of course it would.

The fact that there are so many people overweight is proof that no such substance exists.

One of the biggest mistakes/scam techniques in the "Health & Wellness" biz is to take isolated biological/biochemical/physiological processes and extrapolate them to something completely unrelated, or to take information that x nutrient does y in one part of the body and use that to "prove" that taking extra amounts of x will lead to automatic y results overall.

You should eat basil because it tastes good and adds a lot to many different dishes. I just got a couple of big bunches at the farmers market last Saturday. Not really sure if I want to make pesto, so I have been eating basil with practically every meal this weekend--with eggs, as part of a marinade for grilled vegetables, in a salad and tonight on homemade pizza. Heck if this is true, I should lose at least 5 lbs of fat by tomorrow morning!
