Starting Stronglifts 5x5 today. I honestly don't think I can Bench or Press with 45lb Olympic bar. Plus...what would I use for my warm-up sets? Tips appreciated!

Don't worry if you can't do the bar. Dumbbells are generally better anyway as they allow for greater range of motion than barbells do. On top of that, barbells remove stabilizer muscles from the movement and allow your dominant side to carry your weaker side which allows you to get away with using a higher weight than what you realistically should be using, almost like the difference between squatting with a smith machine vs. squatting with a free bar. The only reason people start using barbells at higher weights is because when you get past a certain weight, dumbbells, due to their size at those higher weights, become extremely awkward to use.

Do you not have access to a women's bar?

Don't worry so much about warm-up sets until the weights get heavier. And you can use dumbbells or a lighter bar (does your gym have any body bars or women's regulation barbells? A women's bar is only 35lbs.) until you work up to an Olympic bar.

Thanks everyone. I'm investigating a gym in a couple hours so I will check out what they have while doing my first workout there. I check out a second gym on Monday.

I'll join the group mandasimba! Thanks :)

Hopefully one or both gyms will have a women's bar.

I just got back from a doctor's appointment where I was given the clear that my 5th metatarsal fracture is totally healed...MEANWHILE...I stubbed my toe on a free weight a couple weeks ago - and apparently have a chip fracture from that!

SO - I NEED to strength train to get rid of this osteopenia because I have a propensity to break bones! :(

    Thanks again!!!!
