foot pain like a needle!??

anyone ever had this? I'm trying to do serious stretching after my runs to keep the knee and shin pain away that I've been dealing with this week. but after today's stretch session, I had a strange pain in the ball of my foot. It seriously feels like I am stepping on a needle every time I put pressure on it. it doesn't feel like a muscle, more like a bone in strange place. any idea what this is or how to make it go away?

Metatarsalgia?
hmm, that doesn't sound pleasant!0 -
Plantar fasciitis? It happens with runners a lot an can feel just like that.0

EEEEK plantar F!
read up on it.
i dont know much about it other than its a bone spur caused by stress, like a rogue bone growth.
supposedly minimalist running helps/prevents it but i can't back up the claim myself
hope it goes away! i know if it is plantar F and its bad enough you can get surgery but that doesn't necessarily make everything better0 -
crud. I'm hoping it'll be okay with some rest. I've never had anything like this before. It's like my big toe bone in the ball of my foot hurts. I just want to run, dang it! Why can't my body cooperate? I'll be destroyed if I'm "out of order."0

A nueroma is also a possibility. It's when the nerves ball up and you get shooting stabbing pain. Not fun.0

D'oh... sounds like a stress fracture.0

Story of my life.
I agree that it sounds like PF. I'd definitely consider a doc visit if you don't feel any better after resting up a little.0 -
It sounds like Platar Fascitis!! I had it quite bad in both feet from an injury. (I fell over & damaged BOTH feet) I was on crutches for a week & almost straight after that I had developed the PF. You will know its that if you find getting up from sitting & when you go to walk there is pain . I related to it as stepping on a knife & it going through your foot. After about 6 steps the pain would ease. Also first thing getting out of bed (after 6-8 hours of not moving) The same response with the pain. Get yourself to a physio or sports masseur as they will massage the fascia muscles & MOST importantly they will strap it the way it has to be done. Also on you tube is some good demonstrations on getting someone else to strap your foot. DONT leave it as it will get worse. The quicker you tackle it the quicker it will heal as it can take 2-4 yrs to heal. I Took 3 but mine was bad & I am in my 40's!! There will be tenderness under the side arch of your foot that radiates when its really inflamed to your heel & even can run up the Archilles tendon. Please dont leave it hoping it will go away. Good luck!!0

Sharp pain in the ball of the foot sounds more like Metatarsalgia. Treatment for that is usually ice and rest. (And make sure you have shoes that fit right and a good, padded insole with arch support. Hope it gets better soon. Good luck with it.0

Plantar fasciatis is felt as "heel pain", not ball of foot pain, just to clear it up for you. I had it for years, but unfortunately I don't know what the ball of foot pain is, I only know I had a pair of "Clarks" dress shoes that I used to wear to work and after a few weeks, I ended up feeling like there was a piece of something logded in my foot like a sliver but there was nothing there. I blamed the shoes that had an area that caused a pressure spot on my foot. I stopped wearing that shoe and it went away. A sports medicine doctor or podiatrist can help that.0

Thanks Lisa & tstawicki. It definitely does sound more like metatarsalgia. I think I'll give it a few days and see how it feels before I schedule a doc visit. Looks like I won't be running the 10k I signed up for tomorrow.0
