I had 1/4 of a watermelon thinking ...

'It's 92% water - it'll fill me up with few calories'.............. NO

Apparently there is 1400 in 1 watermelon. How can that be?????

92% Water 1400 calories

Can someone explain please???

Thanks

Probably still quite a bit of sugar? Maybe this will help: http://www.fitday.com/webfit/nutrition/All_Foods/Fruits_and_Juices/Watermelon_raw.html

One cup has about 48 calories. I don't know how many cups 1/4 of a watermelon is.

A gram of sugar has 4 calories in it. And there is 10 grams of sugar in a cup of watermelon, so it should be around 40-50 calories per cup, depending on if you slice it or ball it, etc.

I would weigh out what you eat, or determine the size of the watermelon as well.

Everything I'm seeing says ~40 calories per cup/4oz, too. Of course, no two watermelons are created equal, but I can't imagine a "normal" watermelon containing that kind of calories! Maybe the insanely huge one I saw last year that took up half a truck tailgate, but that was freakishly large.

Funny, I was thinking the same thing awhile ago. I was looking up foods low on the glycemic index (I fear I'm prediabetic, if not full blown diabetic!), and I was surprised to see that Watermelon was actually quite high on the list! Makes no sense to me, but who am I to question it. =(

The problem with watermelon is that it is just sugar and water. It isn't like an apple, it doesn't really have any fiber. Think about it, watermelon could be made into juice easy enough but an apple or pear has some "meat" to it.

Sounds about right, according to the MFP food database.

1 wedge (appx 1/16th of a melon) is 86cal,18g sugar
16 wedges (appx 1 whole melon) is 1373cal, 284g sugar

eta: I have to admit, i am surprised. I would have guessed far less calories.
  • because of the sugar content. it's still one of the best fruit!
