Can't do certain exercises..Normal or not?

I tried to do Jillian Michael's Killer Buns and Thighs..I seriously could not do all of the exercises. Is that normal? I could not get into side plank at all because I couldn't hold myself up! I followed the beginner trainer, but it was still way difficult for me.. I had to stop after each circuit, so about every 7 minutes and catch my breath or I seriously would have passed out..That said, my heart rate usually goes up very quickly and I can't do the treadmill yet because when I tried at my gym last year I know my rate hit 180 in less than 2 minutes.. My resting is about 100. Any tips? Is the work out even worth it if I can't do all of it and will it get any easier? I feel like I am the only one who couldn't complete it. I just want to know if this is normal for people starting up exercise after not exercising for a long period of time. Weird part is stuff Jillian said was hard like kicks and leg lifts were a piece of cake..lol when I could do the side position on my elbow and she wanted leg lifts it was no problem because I'm naturally really flexible, just not very stable obviously! I had no idea I was so out of shape as of now. That said it really made me feel discouraged, which is why this is in the motivation forum..I feel pretty down at the moment and like I wonder if anything can get me in shape when I'm this bad! I know it's silly, but I still feel that way. Lol

Every day you work out will suck less.

One of my goals is to get good at pushups. Starting from not being able to do pushups...even on my knees. My first day, I was supposed to "go to burnout" and I did....8...on my knees. But by being consistent, there are measurable results.

You can do it, as long as you KEEP doing it. :)

I used to be really fit in comparison, which is why I'm so freaked out! I feel on the verge of death because of it. LOL! SIlly. I was in high school until '08 and I remember if I felt fat (which I was insane because I wasn't! LOL) I would do like 200 push ups followed by 200 sit ups no problem! lol I also would work out 5 hrs a day 4 times per week non stop and I enjoyed it..I still love the gym, so maybe I should start that way 2 hrs every few days, but I'm not sure if it will tone me as well or not. Thank you so much for letting me know..it really helps to feel like I'm not just the weakest person ever lol

This is totally normal. The more you do it the more you will improve. Just keep at it and you will build up your strength.
If it means you have to modify it so be it, just try to do more each time.

Like cr I couldn't do push ups. But now, pushups are easy, and I can do at least 10 men's push ups.

one of my goals is to be able to do a pull up, and that's going to take a lot of work.

    Good luck either way.

I can't stand pull ups! lol they made us do those in elementary school..we had to do pull ups and do laps around the gym in an obstacle course ek..lol not fun! The only part I enjoyed was a ladder we had to climb and we were timed. Well off topic but on a side note I didn't have to try pushups, but I'm pretty sure I'd fail :/ lol I used to be so good at them. Thank you for the luck! I'm sure I need it :]

I agree with the other ladies, its totally normal to not be able to do something at the start, or not be able to do things properly. You will get better and stronger. I was totally un-co when I did my first few JM workouts (posted a pretty similar post about it too!), couldn't hardly do one push up on my knees, now I can do 2 sets of 10 on my toes, which is HUGE for me LOL!!. Even after a few weeks some of her moves still KILL me.

I haven't even tried the killer buns and thighs yet cause I know it is going to kick my *kitten*! Though I plan to do it for the first time this week, but having looked at it I know there are things that I won't be able to do straight away..Oh and from what I have head, that particular vid kicks even fit girls *kitten*! Its meant to be tough.

That is a relief to read so thank you! LOL I can for the most part get through Killer Buns and thighs..I just can't support myself with just one hand, so side planks are DIFFICULT and jumping from the floor up is too much for me right now lol I'm only 6 weeks post partum..I need some time to add some more muscle before I can work it that way! It's nice to know some people like their work outs. I hope I can enjoy it too.. You really are making me look forward to the 30DS!

I've done a lot of JM's dvds, and 30DS is the easiest believe it or not. It kind of builds you up to doing the others.

Now I haven't done killer buns and thighs yet so I don't know anything about that. Side planks are also in no more trouble zones and I find them tough!

If you are 6 weeks post-partum your muscles will be extremely weak through no fault of your own, so give yourself a break. You're doing great. And of course there's still a point to doing it, any exercise is better than none.

    Well done :flowerforyou:

Sounds like you need to build up your core muscles slowly, maybe some pilates? But do seek the advice of a qualified trainer as it has to be done right! But pilates is great for building up core strength which in turn will help with stability for other exercise.

    Good Luck

30ds is actually the first thing i did after a 2 year stint of injury-related no exercise. I was only just over a month out of surgery the first time i did 30ds, so i was VERY careful and modified the moves a lot.

2.5months out from surgery, and a lot of working out later, and i still doubt i could do a side plank, so don't fret. also, initially my heart rate went up really high, and my resting heart rate was quite high, but after only a couple of weeks i was shocked to see my resting heart rate had lowered a lot.

My advice is just to modify, modify, modify, and keep building up to the highest level. you can do it, but yeah it is VERY discouraging to go from very fit to very unfit-but-trying-to-get-fit. i used to jog up a hill that i now stagger up, but my stagger is getting a little more like swagger every day. really, you can do it :)

(also, i could never do pushups. i started hundred pushups program at literally 2 knee pushups. now i can do 5 sets of 8,10,7,7,8. I still cannot do a proper pushup though. one day~)

Yeah..i can squat, lunge, bicep curl etc all day but i can not for the love of me do a push-up. My arms just dont seem to bend..im not worrying about it because with strength will come ability to do them..i hope :)

I definitely pray you're right and thank you so much for the pep talk! I exercised during my pregnancy, but the last couple months I didn't because my pelvic bone at one point was dislocated and I had a clicking in my joints by my thighs/hips..ouch so I just didn't realize how much not exercising was effecting my body at that time and I guess I see it now! lmso
