Anybody an expect on Sonoma, CA?

My bf and I are heading out west (we're from Michigan) for a wedding near San Francisco this weekend. Before we head home, we're going to have an afternoon to spend time in Sonoma. We're planning to do a more extensive wine country trip in the future, so I know we'll have a lot more to see/do than just an afternoon, but if you're familiar with the area, is there a place or two that you'd definitely recommend seeing if you only had a day?

We like wine, will be driving, and don't want to spend a billion dollars on this particular trip.

TIA for any advice!

Ugh, I definitely meant to ask if anyone was an "expert" on Sonoma...not expect. I don't seem to be able to delete and re-post or edit the title though. Oops.
  • Have you been to San Francisco? It's only a 45 minute drive away and you could see a whole bunch of stuff in one afternoon.

(I live in SF and grew up in Petaluma (in Sonoma Country).

Yea, we'll be in SF for a day of tourist stuff (bf went to law school there and I've only been once ten years ago) before the wedding. We have a day after wedding festivities as well, which is when we're hoping to do the Sonoma thing. We may also just go back to SF, depending on how we feel. We're pretty flexible at this point.

if you only have a day, I would suggest heading up to Santa Rosa and take River road out to the coast. you will pass several wineries along the way, pass though Gurniville (quaintish), once you hit the coast, head south on Hwy 1 and stop in bodega bay for lunch or a early dinner. you can look up some hiking trails and spend the afternoon. then follow hwy 1 all the way back to the golden Gate Bridge.

that will make a pleasant drive, that it you stop along the way should fill up your day and allow you to see some lovely country side.

(I lived in that area for about 8 years)

    hope that helps.
