Paleo/primal

So with my husband health problems my being over weight I'm thinking we may give this whole paleo/primal gluten free thing a try. Even though he has yet been diagnosed gluten(whatever) all the signs symptoms etc. add up to seem that this could be a possiblity. So paleo(not sure what exactly primal is yet) sounds like it may be the way to go. Only thing My husband only eats white potatoes, all canned green beans, lima beans, corn and peas. for veggies, and I can force a banana on him rarely. So knowing that haha that leaves me with no other veggies to give him. That I know of...keep in mind that we will start eating this way as much as we can tomorrow may 1 2012. So if any one who eats this way and lives this life would like to add me to help us and answer any questions we may have that would be great. Advice and support

I suggest checking out "marks daily apple" website - lots of great info.
I went paleo/primal, and I'm still getting used to it. It does take getting used to, and you will crave the sugars and processed foods for a bit but it DOES go away.
I've been eating tons of sweet potatoes, greek yogurt, carrots, meats [chicken breast, steak], TONS OF SPINACH, my protein powder, almond milk, almonds, etc. I'm sticking to 100g of carbs a day or less right now, for a month, then probably going to maintenance and 130g a day.
It is a complete change in lifestyle. It isn't a fad diet. I don't have issues with bloating, but I didn't realize I was a bit bloated until I started and it all fell off pretty much. I'm still working on it, I'm definitely not perfect at ALL yet.0 -

Hi!
Sounds like he needs to expand his veggies! Will he eat any salad at all? That is an easy way to get lots of leafy veggies without many carbs. I guess it's time to experiment a little. My hubby didn't even know he liked braised cabbage (and neither did I) until we cooked it and tried it! Also have a few other new favorites, like mashed cauliflower (instead of mashed potatoes).
Good luck! You can do this!0 -
eggplant is practically steak....right? good luck! I have friends who do very well on the paleo diet (not for me though)0

I haven't tried the paleo diet yet, but I'm Gluten intolerant. If he cuts out wheat from his diet (and all it's lovely relatives) he may start to feel much better. Gluten free pre-made stuff (breads and sweets) can be just as fatty and twice as caloric (it is very dense), so that is something to watch. He definitely needs some more veggies! I found this site:

Lots of yummy recipes. I may try some, and I'm not even Paleo! You can do it! it has taken me about two years to go all Gluten Free. I still have a sneak now and again, but I regret it when I do. I got MORE sensitive to it when I cut it out of my diet for a long time, so beware!0 -
Thanks all, I've tried very hard to get the hubster to eat more veggies he has tried them all and either it actually makes him sick or he knows even if they are hidden he's weird...lol but we will continue to try he has said that he would try everything but onion onion actually seriously makes him sick soooo but hey maybe it wasn't making him sick everything else was and that was just what kicked it over the edge0

He eats some canned vegetables over the fresh vegetables? I find the taste of fresh so much better! I'm not bashing or anything, everyone has differnt tastes! If some make him sick is it possible he has some kind of food allergy he's unaware of? I used to hate veggies when I was younger, then I didn't eat them for years afterwards. Then I started working in a resturant about 10 yearsago and discovered I actually liked veggies- my mother was just a horrible cook!! Lol! But good luck with everything! I cut way back on carbs a few months ago and I feel awesome and it has worked very weel for my weight loss too!0

you have to keep in mind that Him and I both grew up on only canned veggies except corn on the cob. So the fact that the only veggies he likes are canned makes sense now me I live for salads(lettuce, tomato, pepper, cukes, onion, etc. not to much variation...lol). See a canned pea to both of us taste so much better then a (fresh we've never had) frozen peas. I would absolutely love to be able to shovel in some veggies in him.....lol... Sooooo Hopefully by some mircle eating the paleo way maybe he'll have cravings for veggies.......lololol0

The vegi aversion can be difficult to overcome. I too was raised on canned and until 18 years old had never eaten fresh (I don't count iceberg).
Real vegis, mushrooms, bell peppers, tomatoes, onions actually made me gag. After leaving home I began to eat more and developed a taste for them. Now I eat pretty much everything.
Thing is canned vegis have a great deal of sodium which makes them more palatable but not the best choice healthwise. You might try putting some salt in the cooking water for some fresh beans. This salts them but very little and see if he likes it better. You can then solwly decrease the added salt. Some people try using real grated parmesean (which is salty and has a naturally occuring flavor enhancer) to top vegis which worked with my son.
Good luck!0 -
good idea about the parm cheese might give that a try. thanks0

I've found that the better you start eating, the more you want to eat the good stuff anyway. My stubborn partner was not very keen on salads until I started experimenting with tasty dressings and additions. A couple of good dressings:
* Coconut Cream/Milk mixed with a dash of Trident sweet chilli sauce...yum.
* Balsamic vinegar (try caramelised if you can) with olive oil and a dash of real maple syrup for sweetness.
* A mix of various asian style ingredients such as sesame oil, lime juice, tamari and fresh spices or herbs such as ginger and coriander. You can add a touch of honey for sweetness if desired. Thai beef salads are great.
I like to add crunchy things to salads for texture, such as nuts (especially macadamias) or seeds. Roast pumpkin (in moderation)added to a salad is just lovely, as are sliced olives. Experiment!0
