OK so I was told by a trainer at my local gym that he did not recommend that I use the treadmill because it is mainly for those that are training for running marathons. I love the treadmill but have not used it in months do to being told this. I have been doing the elliptical and ski machine (ARC Trainer), but I really miss the treadmill. What do you think? Any advice is much welcome.

That is the weirdest thing I've ever heard! Time to find a new trainer who knows what they're talking about...

Find a new trainer. Sounds like maybe the gym only has a limited number and was trying to "sell" up other things to get use spread around. Or try quitting the gym and running outdoors.
  • That's interesting advice... are there few treadmills in your gym? Perhaps he thought that there wouldn't be any available for people who wanted to focus on running.. I don't agree with that though. Maybe he was suggesting that there are more effective/appropriate machines for you, that incorporate the upper body/arms as well. I'm obviously not a personal trainer, but I'd imagine that it would be easiest to motivate yourself to workout if you were to use your favourite machine.

I use the treadmill at my gym to cool down after the elliptical. There are unused treadmills around me, and no one is ever waiting to use mine, so I do walk on it. As far as I know, a treadmill's sole purpose is not to help only those who are working on running for a marathon. A treadmill can help to increase your endurance, whether you're running or jogging or walking.

If there isn't a crowd of people waiting to use the treadmills, I don't see why you couldn't use it. Again, I'm no expert.. just sharing my experience with treadmills.

    That trainer is ridiculous. Wouldn't those training for 5Ks, 10Ks, the Mile, 13.1, 26.2, 100K, 100M, 50K, 50M also benefit from a traedmill? or....gasp...the road?

Wouldn't those who want to improve their cardio and their...um...running also benefit from the treadmill?

I would get a new trainer. This may not be a huge deal, but it's likely a good indication that even more ridiculous advice is to follow...(do 800 dumbell curls with 3#!!! Insta-buff!)

I swear, too many trainers are just f*#cking idiots.

There is no more polite way of saying it.

He probably said that because the boss told him to cut down on the number of people using the treadmills so they didn't have to buy any more.

The treadmill is a machine that allows you to get your heart rate up, like any other. Use the machine you like the most.

Personally, I'm more of an elliptical fan, but whatever floats your boat.

You're paying for membership in the gym, right? You get to use whatever equipment you want.

Thank you all for the advice. Lots of treadmills in my gym I go to a Planet Fitness that is huge. They have I don't know maybe 30 of them and most of them are not used when I go. Once again thanks for the advice I do love the treadmill and will start using it again. I also do the elliptical and ski machine and love them to. I was just wondering about the advice I was given by the trainer at the PF gym. Thanks again, you guys/gals are great. :)
