Bump - I'm curious about this too.0

Hmmmm... maybe more water in the canned ones? That's all I can think of.0
-
Because when they can them, they suck all their nutrients out of them.0

There are a gazillion incorrect entries in the MFP Food database. You probably found one. Look it up on Calorie King or something for both.0

Where are you getting these numbers?
From the MFP database...
Beans - Snap, green, cooked, boiled, drained, without salt
1 cup
Calories: 44
Sodium: 1 mg
Del Monte - Cut Green Beans Canned
1 cup
Calories: 40
Sodium: 680 mg
Are you concerned about 4 calories? It's well within the margin of error.0 -
well its one of 2 things
A) the veggies are cooked slightly before canning i know they do this with frozen, not sure about canned but if they so the cooking process loses nutrience
the beaens are most likely packed in some sort of liquid (most likely water) and this will leach out nutrience)
as far as the salt. salt is a very popular preservative and it also makes them taste better, thats why they use salt. not to say beans need salt to taste good, but after the canning process the salt does help
hope that helps0 -
Or if you use the mobile app, scan the barcode and compare labels (for the can anyway). I wouldn't think the calories would be any different, just the sodium.0

Yep, I thought about this the other day. I usually eat frozen peas. Picked up a can from the store because I had no space in my freezer for frozen, and it was a similar sized portion but FAR lower in calories. I agree that it'll be the removal of nutrients - my freshly frozen peas are always crisp, fresh and bright green. The canned ones were a kind of dark, muddy green - looked far less appetising!0

No they do not lose their nutrients.

You have to compare the facts on MFP web. When you log your food click on the blue nutrient fact before submitting. You will be amazed at how different the numbers are for the same food. You also can list the food yourself. There are only 25 calories in 3/4 cup of fresh green beans. My information is from http://www.livestrong.com. Always check your labels to the MFP. When you find one that is correct don't forget to click yes to confirm.1/2 cup of fresh green beans is more calories than 1 cup of beans from a can but waaayyy lower sodium content....why do fresh vegetables have more calories than canned???0
