PCOS........

Hi there

I have been diagnosed with PCOS and was wondering if there are any other ladies out there with the same diagnosis and if/how it has affected their weight loss journey and what they have done to overcome or push things along the way to get to their goal. After I had my first son nearly 9 years ago I lost around two stone so quickly with weightwatchers. I'm now again two stone heavier at 10 stone, 5 foot short and 36 in a few weeks time. Maybe weight loss 9 years ago was easier as I was in my 20's and I didnt have PCOS then. I dunno. But its making me incredibly low and depressed that I seem to lose weight sooooo slowly and that is only by extreme strict dieting and vigorous exercise. Im constantly tired and fatigued altho iron levels are border line.

Any advice or PCOSers out there, please reply and add me with ur advice x xx x

  • Hey there :)
I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 19 (I am 26 now).
I was never really heavy until high school and then I started putting on weight out of no where,
that's when I went to a specialist and was diagnosed.
I have found that counting calories has helped me the most when it comes to losing weight.
Has your doctor put you on Metformin? That is a great thing to take to help with PCOS, and it will also encourage weight loss.
I used to take Metformin, but I was one of the few who had terrible stomach pains from it. Feel free to add me and we can chat more.

^ that first sentance fits me exactly. She is exactly right. I find that with PCOS we have to be more concious of the things that we put in our mouths so the calorie counting is going to be one of your best tools. The Metformin could really help you it is to help with the insulin resistance that a lot of women with PCOS have. I have never taken it but a lot of women have positive results with it. One of the things that I have found for me personally was to cut back on dairy as much as you can. Now I am a cheese addict so I will probably never have the willpower to cut it out completely but what I do is whenever I can I use soy milk or almond milk as a substitute (Plain, Vanilla or Chocolate depending on what fits best).

I know that there are a lot of good groups on here that can offer support and even more advice. You should check them out you may find the things that works for you!

    Good luck!

I have PCOS too & am due to start on Metformin too! However I'm already B12 deficient & I know Metformin can cause interrupt B12 absorption. I'm worried that it will zap the little energy that I already have!

PCOS, extreme case of insulin resistance (have been hospitalized before going into Insulin Shock).... Im under an Endocrinologist's care right now who specializes in PCOS treatment/plans/methods and I threaten her every day to clone her and take her home with me, I just love her!!! LOL!

Each patient will have a different scenario with regard to PCOS. I have clean ovaries however my hormone levels pre-diagnosis were enough to quarantine me for almost a month (insulin levels affected my liver and I had developed hepatitis)... But, through finding the right clinicians who knew what they were doing, Im at the half-way point of my weight loss.

In conjunction with allergy testing, removing foods that cause problems for me, four prescriptions (dosages are low for now, except my metformin), four over-the-counter supplements - all doctor's orders mind you, Im doing very well keeping the PCOS under control.

We have to be extra focused on meal planning, the types of foods we consume/not consume, and we have to work hard just like anyone else... the weight loss CAN happen but you have to be mentally focused to make this happen.
