What have I DONE?!?....

I have been half assing this getting healthy thing for a while now. I'm definitely making some strides and have no doubt that eventually it'll all just stick in my brain and I'll get to health/fitness level I am hoping for. Example: If i spend an hour on the treadmill 35 minutes of it will be running and 10 minutes of walking will be intermittent followed by 15 mins of walking high incline. Lately i feel like I could go longer but i do have three kids and a husband so i must go home at some point...

Anywhooo, yesterday I allowed my sister in law to sign me up for a Warrior Dash! I'm not certain but I believe its a 5k with some tough obstacles/challenges thrown into the mix.

WTF was I thinking?!? I'm already picturing myself throwing up on my shoes, and possible only at the halfway point.

Anyone have any suggestions on amping up my stamina? Or faking my own death?

If it is anything like the course that I did last year - put that treadmill on an incline. It was at a ski resort.

Also - most people don't run the whole thing. There is no shame in walking the hills.

    Also - it's a lot of fun.

If you're not yet doing this, you'll need to start practicing running outside as much as possible. You want your body to get adjusted to dealing with uneven terrain, weather, etc. It's completely different than being on the treadmill. Just start slow and easy and build up to a 5k ;)

Also...might want to throw some strength training in there. I've never done a Warrior Dash, but I think it's a 5k with an obstacle course--you might need to pull yourself up over things (I really have no idea, I'm just guessing!).

Believe it or not, 5k is pretty easy. You have to work up to it, but once you do it, you'll love it. Then, pull have to add in obstacles. I'm not sure how I'd train for that. A 5k for me isnt even a warm up, so I wouldnt be worried about the running part, I'd focus on the obstacles. I live by the beach, so I'd probably start running on the sand, up and down stairs, jumping intermittently, crawling on the ground for 50 yards, that kind of stuff. Or, you could just run, then come home and do weight training, push ups, pulls up, sit ups, etc,. That would probably be kind of the same thing. Good luck. I've always wanted tot do that, but I don't have any friends willing and I don't want to do it alone.

How long do you have until the event? What kind of mileage are you running now?

And yeah, get off the treadmill and run outside.

    37 days until the event....

Right now i can probably run a mile non-stop but that's on the treadmill. I think starting tomorrow (today is weight lifting) I am just going to go home go out my front door and head in any direction for 45 minutes whether it is running or walking and then turn around and head back home. We'll see how that goes...

I agree with getting outside. I have not done one yet but am doing my first one in a month. I have been strength training, really working on upper body to pull myself through the obstacles, running outside, running on treadmill inclines when I can't get outside. I also Kickbox and Zumba just to change it up but I'm sure cross training won't hurt any!

No, you'll want to go any direction for 22.5 minutes. One direction for 45 minutes....means 45 minutes back.

Good for you! I allowed my wife to convince me to sign up for the "Trek Across Maine", which is a 60-mile-a-day, 3-day bike ride. I've been training like a madman on both the elliptical (to build stamina) and my actual bike (to build *kitten*-to-seat resistance).

You're already well on your way there from the sound of it. Getting outside is a good step.

Keep in mind that you want to train for all conditions - just like my bike ride, the weather will hopefully be good but might end up crappy and you still have to do it. Go for intentional runs in the rain to find out if your gear is adequate (I found out via a 40-mile cycle ride in a 20MPH blowing rain that cotton socks are a really, really bad idea).

    LMAO! *kitten*-to-seat resistance...priceless!

Ya you're right...45 minutes out the first time with the unavoidable 45 minutes back might be a bit much. Did I mention I intend to run with my phone in my pocket...

    Warrior dash isn't that difficult.

Couch to 5K is a good program to get you ready.

37 days isn't very long. I think your biggest challenge will be running outside since you've used the treadmill exclusively. Don't overdo it in the training and enjoy the event.

Are you opposed to taking supplements? There are some non-stim, very low calorie supplements that help endurance. I use Hemavol by iForce and it's helped me extend my time doing HIIT and cardio.

Don't you feel a bad cold coming on??? Seriously, sounds to me like this will be nothing for you. 35 minutes on a treadmill at an incline should prepare you quite well. Good luck, and just enjoy yourself.

Thanks everyone - it seems that the general theme is to just try to have fun.

If you have to walk most of it, do so. I ran by a lot of people walking the course.
