So i am an EMT and I will be going into the FDNY EMS program soon.. however, their requirements are sooo strict.... for my height 5'2'' they are demanding i be under 140 lbs or they will not accept me into the class and be denied until 3 years which is when i could try again....... WTF do i do?! This is an amazing NYC job and career for anyone in that field.... I am highly motivated to losing weight to get myself into this program but how in the WORLD can i lose 35 lbs in a month?!

Check with your doctor. Not kidding. That's a lot of weight to lose in one month so it would be best to be medically supervised.0

you are going to need to dig deep as a former navy sailor i can tell you lots of tricks n ways to loose that weight fast i can guarantee you you will not be a happy camper but the results are worth it. I do agree that seeing a wight loss doctor would be your first step thats what i did i lost 35 pounds in 1 month and passed my physical exams after i had my son last year.0

im in NYC, and they have such strict requirements here..... for everything lol please tell me! i need something to work with! i dont care if im miserable.... lol0

It depends on how much you have to lose, from you post I'm assuming that is 35 lbs. the most I've personally seen anyone lose in a month is 23 and he had well over 150 to lose. I would also agree that checking with your doctor would be best. It's funny, my friend has the opposite problem to go into the army, for his hight he needs to gain 27 lbs.0

thats crazy! its much easier to gain then lose.... just eat all your favorite chocolates and candies and work out to gain muscle weight/mass lol... if it was only that easy for me......0
-
I think you need to be realistic and accept that it is probable you won't hit that goal. I'm not saying don't try your damned hardest as it is possible, just not probable. Go see a doctor, although I imagine they'd just say that isn't healthy and probably offer no more advice.
My advice if you did want to try, is instant calorie restriction, only drink water, seriously kick your sodium in the *kitten* and do pre breakfast workouts/runs/walks. Restrict your carbs too. Hopefully someone will offer you some better advice!0 -
I have no idea if this is even a good idea or not, but what about those detox drinks, pills, etc.? Some of them claim fast results. I've never tried anything like that, so I don't know how much you would lose or if they even work.0
-
Thanks guys! I've been wrapping my thighs and stomach while I workout to lose inches "water weight" its motivating me more to want to lose more fat than water so I work out doubly as hard.0
-
Keep in mind that 35 pounds in a month is extreme, and even if you could lose that amount, at what cost? You may not be able to do the physical requirements! Food for thought...0
-
A few pounds is definitely water, so you could easily do the first 5 or 6. You should probably see a dr right away if you're seriously thinking about doing something like this. If you're fit, are there any exceptions (bodyfat test instead of strict height/weight)?
And, either way, don't give up your dream! Stick with it, whether it's now or later!0 -
If you don't try for it now, could you try in 6 months or a year? You could be fabulously healthy by then! I don't think the drastic weight loss is a good idea.0

I don't know why you would need to be a certain weight to be an EMT, I see overweight EMT's all day every day, by a LOT more than just 30lbs . I think you're looking into it a bit much, if they require you to do a boot camp like training course or something I can see a "recommendation" of being somewhat healthy, but if you can keep up being a few pounds overweight then there's no reason that you cannot apply based on an irrelevant number on the scale.0

Seriously??
1. It is NOT easier to gain for some - my husband tries HARD to gain weight and still can't hardly get above 170.
2. You will NOT gain muscle from eating chocolates and candies....
And I agree with everyone else...if you only weigh 175-ish (just assumed because 175 - 35 = 140) consult a doctor first. Trying to lose that much weight that fast is HARD on your body - and pretty foolish, actually...0 -

Like me, you live in MO - that's why you see overweight EMT's every day...0 -
Ok lets be realistic. You will not lose 35 lbs in one month. If you do you won't do it healthy and its going to take a toll on your body and your mental state Your effort will fall short because you won't be in a state to do well. I think you should remove yourself from the list this go round.
On another note you didn't know they had weight requirements before now? Why so last minute?0 -
You would need a deficit of at least 3500 calories a day to do this...... that's hours of working out a day.
A doctor and nutritionist are definitely needed. I would imagine some juicing/detoxing too. I have no idea but they do it on the Biggest Loser but it's my understanding they workout 8 hours or more a day.0 -
The only way I know to lose this much weight in a month is the Master Cleansing diet. I did it once for 21 days and lost 15 pounds. I was skinny to start with (120 pounds). You will gain a small portion of the weight back quickly within the first two weeks when you start eating normally. Check it out to see whether it is the right option for you.0
-
Even if you did lose the weight that quickly, probably through starvation and extreme exercise, the second you started eating again the weight will come back. What will you do then? If they have this requirement you will get checked again. And again. And again. Do they have any contingency plans? For example, the military would require those who didn't meet the requirements to get "taped" to determine their body fat percentage. As long as your body fat was within a reasonable range and you could meet the fitness standards you were fine.0

What about HCG? Or The Master Cleanse???0

After some quick googling, yes they do have some weight requirement that tends to get people disqualified. However there is nothing in there that states you must wait 3 years. You are placed on "hold" until you meet the weight requirement and when you do, you reenter the hiring process from where you left off.
If I were you I'd just lose the weight over the next couple months in a HEALTHY way. There's no way you'll be fit enough or have the strength to pass their physical requirements after starving yourself for a month, so you're going to be in the same boat regardless. Just do it right the first time, your body will thank you later.0 -

Oh, good gravy, don't encourage those! :noway:0 -
I dont know enough to give advice, but I have an inkling that tuna, chicken and vegtables are in your near future.
Best of luck to you.
Its been done before and im sure you can do it.0 -
Short of the feeding tube diet (and even then I don't think you can do it), it's impossible.0
-
If it were me I would not stress about something that 's no going to happen . I would focus on losing the weight this year and then you can tryout in three years.0
-
35 lbs in one month is too much to do safely. I will not sugar coat it. If you lose weight that fast, a big chunk of it will be muscle loss. Maybe another opportunity like this will present itself... but no job is worth dying for.0
-
you can get it off but it won't be healthy and most probably won't be permanent. Severe calorie restriction - I'm talking 500-800 calories a day. Workouts 6-8 hours a day. That's assuming you are under medical guidance at all times since the chance of cardiac arrest are maximized....
Why did you wait so long to start getting ready? You may need to wait the next 3 years just to stay healthy...
Whatever you decide to do...good luck!0 -
Go for it! You can be your own first customer!0
-
I would do it properly - and I don't think it can be done in a month... besides, would you want someone on your crew who can pass the weight test but not be strong enough to back them up when they need a hand? Just because you lose the weight doesn't mean you're strong enough physically to do the JOB.
That sounds mean and *****y but I mean it in the most constructive way possible, I swear. I wish you the best of luck whatever you decide!! Be safe! :flowerforyou:0 -
honestly your only hope would be wonderslim beriatric shakes( liquid diet shakes) for people to loose wieght fast before lap band surgery. If your healthy and have no medical issues you may be able to do it with cardio and the liqiud diet.I would do a cleanse as well( most people have 10-20 pounds in their intestines) Good luck0
