Have you seen a dr? I never had that problem so I don't really have any advise. But bravo for BF; it's the best thing you can do for your son!
  • I understand your frustration I wasnt able to breastfeed at ALL because my milk never came in. My little guy is two now and I feed him a healthly diet and he is a VERY health little guy rarely gets sick. So tryin to keep a positive outlook for you

I nursed my son for 9 months and my twin girls for 6 months. I got mastitis (breast infection) chronically with both. I took antibiotics at the first sign it was coming on. I hear from pediatrician friends that the baby can keep the bacteria in his mouth, and that the bacteria don't harm the baby, but they transfer to the breast and can make you sick. Occasionally, I could pump really good and get it to go away, but mostly I needed the meds. My advice is take the meds and keep nursing as long as you want. The antibiotics don't hurt the baby. They work quickly, and you'll be back in business. Keep nursing through the infection. That doesn't hurt the baby either.

That chronic mastitis is a real annoyance, but you can manage it. Add me as a friend if you want.

When you say infection... do you mean mastitis or thrush? They require very different treatments, and also very different precautionary measures.

If you want to share some more details I might be able to give you some ideas...... what age is your baby, and how often do they feed (night/day) and have they started solids?

I fed my youngest for 2 years through many issues.

I'm so sorry to hear. Like the others I would suggest calling or going to see your doctor. I haven't had any issues...maybe because I've been pumping the whole time. I could never get my little dude to take to the breast and I was determined for him to get breastmilk so I just ended up pumping. Good luck...I so hope it gets better soon.

I have three kids- the first I breastfed for 2 years, the second for 2 1/2 years, and the third I am currently nursing - she is 5 months old.

So- it sounds like you could have mastitis, or thrush, or a plugged duct. Go to Kellymom (google) and read about those things. Go to your doctor and see about getting antibiotics. i have had recurring plugged ducts and mastitis, and once i got antibiotics (for mastitis) and worked through the plugged ducts, everything was better. hang in there... (((hugs))))

Aw I feel for you! I have had problems with mastitis and thrush with baby three, but it seems to be better now. When I'm pumping, sometimes the breast gets irritated and infection sets in from the baby's mouth while she's eating. I'm not sure exactly what you're wanting help with? I would definitely go back to the doctor, drink plenty of fluids, and take any medication they prescribe to you. I know it can be frustrating, especially after much success with baby one, but don't give up!

i just saw your post that it's mastitis- go get antibiotics. i was on the fence whether or not to do that for myself, but both times i've had mastitis, the antibiotics helped SOOOOO much. stopping nursing will make it worse, actually- you need to empty the milk so just keep on nursing- if not more than ever.

Are they starting as plugged ducts? I had no problems with my daughter but with my son I got plugged ducts all the time (he wasn't a good nurser) until I started taking soy lecithin supplements. It helps prevent them.

Best thing for mastitis is to keep feeding as nothing removes milk from the breast as well as a baby. If it's really far too painful to feed from make sure you express as much as you can from it to try and clear it. There is no issue with the milk for the baby - they can continue to feed from this milk with no issues.

You need to make sure at the first signs of discomfort to get to the doctor as it very quickly can get worse.

Do you have quite a high milk flow? It's often common for ladies with a high supply to get mastitis as the milk isn't removed and can cause blocked ducts which can turn into mastitis.

If you start to feel any lumps in your breasts make sure you feed more frequently from it and also slowly massage the lump towards the nipple while you're feeding. Also in the shower can release a let down which is another good time to massage.

Make sure when you feed that you're not holding your breast (can lead to blocked ducts) and that your bras fit correctly. Even things like hanging a nappy bag over the same spot on your breast can lead to mastitis so be aware of what your breasts are regularly coming in to contact with.

2 months is still very early days and your milk supply will still be changing a lot and trying to fit around your son.

Make sure you express if you start to feel like you're becoming full (but only enough to releive discomfort as excess expressing will increase your milk supply which could cause more issues).

Not sure if you've used this site but it's brilliant for breastfeeding advice: http://kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mother/recurrent-mastitis/

Have you been to see the doctors for treatment? Hope it clears up for you quickly. I remember just how painful it is.

Oh and to help the plugged ducts come out, I filled an old sock with rice, microwaved it to warm, and held it on my breast as he nursed, with his chin pointing towards the plug if possible.
