This thread is NOT for debate for/against low-carb diets. We've all heard plenty of that, thank you. ![:) :)](https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/resources/emoji/smile.png)
I am gluten intolerant and, for the past 3 months, have been trying to eat a primal-type diet and it's great except for breakfast. I've always always always eaten cereal for breakfast, and anything else just seems ugh. I've tried a breakfast of meat/eggs/milk, and I just feel like I'm eating way too many animal products. So I tried eating a breakfast of eggs & vegetables or meat & veggies.. but I just can't stomach the thought of veggies for breakfast. I can only do it a couple of days before I just push them away in disgust. The past week, I've just given up and have been eating gluten-free buckwheat flakes with full fat milk. I enjoy that breakfast, but it doesn't leave me full quite as long and it isn't grain-free, obviously.
So, paleo/primal eaters.. what do you eat for breakfast?

My go to low carb breakfasts, I don't do primal, is a veg fritatta or smoked salmon with scrambled eggs. With all your complaints about animal products a paleo diet is a push imo.0

I don't mind using animal products provided they're grass-fed and local if I can get it. I just feel greasy after consuming a plate of meat and eggs for breakfast, and no matter what paleo/primal says - I don't think eating a plate full of meat (organic or not) is healthy and sustainable. It's not a problem for lunch & dinner since I can have 4 oz of meat with plenty of veggies. Just need a better breakfast option.0

How about an omelette with mushrooms, spinach, diced tomatoes, and a little cheese?0

Nah, I'll ditch the label and stick with the buckwheat flakes before I force-feed myself any more vegetables for breakfast. Thanks for your suggestions.0

Have you tried the big *kitten* pancake?
1-2 Tbsp. coconut oil or butter, for cooking
1/2 sweet potato, grated OR 1/2 pear, cored and sliced thinly (or 1/2 sliced apple, 1 sliced banana, couple handfuls of berries, sky’s the limit here)
1/2 cup nuts, chopped or slivered (optional—pecans are great with sweet potato, almonds with pear, etc.)
4 eggs
1/3 cup coconut milk
2 Tbsp. coconut flour
1/4 tsp. baking powder
2 tsp. vanilla extract
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg (or cardamom to mix it up)
dash of salt
butter and maple syrup, for serving
Pear-Almond BAP
1) Melt coconut oil or butter in ovenproof 10-inch skillet set over medium-high heat. Add sweet potato/pear/whatever you’re using, stirring until softened, about 5-6 minutes.
2) Meanwhile, add eggs through salt to a blender. Whirl until combined.
3) When the stuff in the skillet is ready, sprinkle nuts over and pour egg mixture in. Reduce heat to medium, cover and cook until mostly set and edges are beginning to dry, about 10 minutes.
4) Fire up your broiler and place the uncovered skillet about 6 inches beneath the flames to finish cooking. Keep an eye on it, it’s ready when top is set and a few brown spots appear, which shouldn’t take more than 5 minutes. Flip over onto a heatproof cutting board, slice up, and dig in.
Serves 2
also - you have smoothies, and a lot of other stuff - seriously google paleo recipes, you get a ton of sites with great recipes0 -
I have to grab and go my breakfast most mornings as I dont' like to eat when I first wake up -
I will usually make a crustless quiche for the week
Basically - Beat 12 eggs, 1/2 cup almond flour & 1 tsp, baking powder and whatever veggies you want to add (I usually sautee mine a bit but think of things like - onion, mushrooms, red pepper, green pepper, broccili) - Bake at 350 for about 30-40 minutes till set
I have also added things like crumbled sausage or bacon to it as well - you can also add some shredded cheese or I have added feta before
You can pour it into an 8x10-9x13 type pan - I have a 6 well deep muffin pan that I use a lot of the time.
This week I used the 6 well one and I just grabbed a box of Jimmy Dean Turkey Sausage patties - so I have 1 egg quiche muffin and 2 sausage patties...
I have also done up meat muffins usinfg grass fed ground beef- http://www.theclothesmakethegirl.com/2012/02/14/vday-gift-for-you-meat-spinach-muffins/
If you dont' want meat think about things like apples with some almond butter or some good greek yogurt with some berries
like someone else said google - lots of good recipes that don't include meat - I consider myself Primal as I allow a bit of dairy in my diet....0 -
I enjoy a sweeter breakfast sometimes, so if you are sticking to paleo or gluten free then maybe try fruit and some kind of fat, almond or natural peanut butter. Someone else mentioned greek yogurts so that might helpful. Dairy is not strickly paleo but if you feel comfortable with it go for it. I am trying to eat more clean myself but dairy is not something that I will give up. Greek yogurt is great for helping to keep that full feeling for longer. Also, I simply like ham and cheese for breakfast. If gluten is an issue then bread or crackers are out but try a corn tortilla. You can make them more clean if you prepare them fresh. I am sure you can find some good recipes online for corn tortillas and if you shop around can find organic masa flour. Good luck!0

Yes, I am seeing some "flexibility" come about amongst my Paleo / Primal friends and family members.
"Safe" starches include potatoes of all varieties and white rice are included as long as the activity level allows these items.
Dairy is allowed provided that your body is tolerant to dairy. Most people I know consume raw dairy in the form of butter, whole raw milk, raw cream and raw cheese.0 -

apple "pudding"
2 apples (sweet ones) peeled and chopped
2 cans of full fat coconut milk
1 tsp coconut milk
1 tablespoon of kerrygold butter
1/8 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1. Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Saute chopped apples in butter for a few minutes and sprinkle with cinnamon. Add nutmeg as well.
2. Add both cans of coconut milk and bring to a slow boil. Reduce heat down and simmer for a half an hour, or until the coconut thickens slightly.
3. Add vanilla extract. Eat warm, cold, or blend with an immersion blender for a thicker consistency.0 -
My daily breakfast has been a coffee with full fat cream and a 30g box of almonds and cranberries. Does me over until morning tea time!0
-
Eggs and turkey bacon sometimes. But most often I start my day with fruit and some almond butter. Don't be afraid to eat "dinner" for breakfast if that's what looks good.0
-
i'm also a big fan of leftovers! Pineapple with chicken for breakfast at some point this week. No vegetables0
-
4 slices of bacon, 3 eggs over easy cooked in the bacon fat. Or a bulletproof coffee. Keep it simple0
-
And animal products tend to deliver the most protein bang for your buck. And good fats.0
-
My paleo breakfast consists of fruit and meat. I usually eat 2 plums, or 1 grapefruit, or an apple and about 250 cals worth of lean meat from the day before... its light and refreshing and it gets me ready for my morning jog... if you really are going paleo then be ready to eat lots of meat. good luck!0
