I'm looking for some high protein breakfast cereal that is inexpensive. And by inexpensive I mean less than $5 a box.

I was thinking of Special K, but I know it's frowned upon this these forums.

  • Kashi Go Lean. The plain variety, not the clusters and stuff.

Yes, just started eating the Kashi Go Lean. It is on sale at Target and Shoprite this week. $2.79 or $2.99.

    Kashi!!!
  • Special K has a protein plus cereal. A lot of people don't like their products, because their bars have so many sugars and what not. I'm not sure of the sugars in that particular cereal, but I know it has to be less than in the chocolate and berry flavors. It doesn't taste bad, either! Also, Kashi cereals are good. If you're concerned about processed foods, most grocery stores offer an organic and gluten free cereal section now. Just eat what you like, and always check lables!

I'm no expert, but I actually like Special K Red Berries - I compared it to Shredded Wheat (not sure you have that in the US?) this morning, and they're not dissimilar per portion size for macro's - plus, you get the added bonus of vit C and some anti-oxidants from the berries :)

Having said that... the macro's may differ quite bit between US and UK versions? I've found some US products are quite high in sugar/salt compared to the UK :S

Edited to add: the sugar in the Red Berries is quite a bit higher, but a fair part of that will be the natural fruit sugars, which some people (including myself) ignore, as a lot of fruits will quite quickly take you over your daily recommended.

Go for the kashi Go Lean original. The Kashi go lean crunch still has a good amount of protein, just not as much. However I find it a little more filling.
  • I usually eat Special K granola cereal. I don't care about processed food or sugar. I'm just in it for low fat and high protein. Never had Kashi, but I'll try it out.

    Special K is a scam.

Are you avoiding eating fats? If so, why?

I'm not avoiding it, I'm just trying to find some low fat cereal. Mainly cause I already drink whole milk

Is there nothing else you could eat besides cereal?

Actually, I'm staying with a friend and I'm not allowed to cook due to fire safety...unless there is something else that is quick and doesn't require much thought I'll stick with cereal.

Quinoa for breakfast. You make it like you would but use milk, add some cinnamon, maple syrup and some fruit. You could make it in a rice cooker if you can't use the stove.

All else considered, if you're not watching sugar intake, maybe a protein bar or something. Or protein shake!
