I was watching the today show and they were talking about heart disease and how its a silent killer...and all the other facts....but they have found studies that have shown that even 4 year olds can show signs of the beginning to heart disease. They say they were doing studies (on children who passed at an early age for different reasons) and they already were starting to get blockage in their arteries. They said it was from the diet....i.e. eating out, or unhealthy foods.

So how important it is that you as a parent not only get healthy for yourself, but also for your children so they can learn to eat correctly also!

p.sp Growing up all i lived on was fast food or unhealthy meals...hope i don't have a heart attack next week lol!

  • I know what you mean! I was raised on crap and it is so hard to break that cycle. I want so badly to teach my kids healthy eating habits so they won't have the same problem that I have now...trying to break my addiction to unhealthy food. It is SO important!!!

Ugh i know how you feel...i would sell my firstborn for a large mcdonald frenchfry with no regrets now lol....before i would eat a double cheeseburger, no pickle no onion, a mcchicken sandwich lite mayo and a large fry......at LEAST 3 times a week......and the other days i had like taco bell or chinese food....and wondered why i gained 60 pounds in the past 2 years.....

But my dad eats the same way and only weighs about 215.....(5'10) but doesn't mean he's healthy......but still he looks ok, just a "beer" belly.

I also hate that if he diets he can lose like 15 pounds in one week!!!! so disgusting!!!!!!

No i havne't...i dont' have kids, i jsut watch them.....but i was preg 2 times before(2 miscarriages) and i turned to my mother who was literally born into a hippy community, to ask her how to make b aby food cause i dindt' want to even buy baby food from the store.......when she was around she was the ultimate health food person.....too bad that didn't last very long lol.

She told me what she would do is use whatever food they had for dinner, take it and use a food processor to blend it, then put it in ice cube trays.....so whenever you want to feed your kid, take out like 2 "ice cubes" and let them thaw then you have your baby food already done.

I did this. It worked really well. I made up all my own baby food for my daughter, it got me eating more fruits and veggies too. I didn't want to waste them and there is only so much freezer room. :)

Really interesting. I never really considered thinking of the effects that way. But when you see 6 year olds that already weight 100lbs you wonder.

omg i saw a child the other day at a restaraunt that was probably 7 years old and i'm not even kidding had to weight 150 pounds....when i was 10 yrs old i reemmber i weight 100(with boobs already forming adn i was like 5'0) and i remember thinking how fat i was....i can't imagine the pain those kids are going throiugh, bacuase you know they get teased at school.....breaks my heart.....but yeah her mom was there and they were both chomping down on chicken fried steak.....and french fries....(i prefer mashed potatoes with mine lol) but was a HUGE portion and that little kid ate it all....i wonder how her mom could sit there and let her do that.....ugh ok enough of my ranting, sorry lol.

I work in a restaurant and it stuns me when parents let their kids gulp down soda after soda! I know when I was a kid in the 70's/early 80's my parents let us drink soda, but times are totally different now. We know a whole lot more about nutrition now then we did then.

Maybe because I was allowed to gulp down soda after soda, that's the reason I'm here now!

I know, I went to a music thing at my daughter's school a few years ago, and she was one of only FIVE kids who weren't overweight to some noticable degree. In the THIRD grade!!!

And I just think, obviously the kids can't provide their own food...so SOMEONE is providing them with junk and taking NO regard for their health!!:grumble:

    SO sad.

Unfortunately "We know a whole lot more about nutrition now then we did then. " is only refering to a small percentage of the people( Like us on here  ), and 1,000's of others.
But there are millions that don't know any better.

I drank alot of pop when I was younger, after sports, and this continued into working shift work, I always said that I needed the caffiene. I now know that was hogwash.

Kids have access to so much pop for a "serving" now.
    7-11 - Big Gulps, slurpees
McD's/Wendy's/BK/etc - Super sized large pop
    Restaurants - unlimited refills.

Also, Soda manufacturers got smart for their marketing.

Years ago, there were pop sizes of 300ml can/bottles, 750 ml bottle and 2L bottle.
To me, a 300ml was a "serving", and if you bought a bigger one, it was to share or over seperate servings.

Now you can buy 500ml bottles, and 1L bottles, and they are created longer and thinner bottles, which gives the idea that there's not that much in there.

Speaking of Soda.... - (which IMO is the #1 biggest problem in this country) I watched Ellen yesterday, she was showing the sizes of cups availalbe for Big Gulps - ridiculous, then she pulled out their newest option, it is a plastic guitar that you fill with soda, looks just like one of those from guitar hero with the neck strap and everything. I have NO idea how many ounces it holds, but it has to be a lot, and it is targeted directly at KIDS!!! Makes me crazy, she had fun making fun of it and it was a pretty funny segment but it just shows how completely wrong the focus on soda is here.

yeah portion control is rediculous in teh united states.....they say when you go out to a restaraunt you should ask the waiter to bag up half your food and he other half is what your portion really shoud be like.

My yongest son is going to be 10yrs old next week. I will get him fast food every once in a while. He rathers home cooked food. He is very into sports and plays baseball. He lives for baseball. He is playing fall baseball right now. We were leaving the park the other night and his friend on another team was fixing to start a game. As I was walking out of the gate his dad was walking in bringing him Burger King with a soda (all supersized) for him to eat while he was in the dugout. I couldn't believe it. He is the same age as my son and is probably triple his size. I blame the parents for that. He can't run without getting out of breath. They should realize that he is going down an unhealthy road.

Exactly...Which is why all of my children will be breastfed.....Formula is EWWWY in my opinion.

Formula fed babies are more likely to be overweight when they get older. They are more prone to overeating too....

I too was a formula fed baby, and I was brought up eating CRAP!...Lots of junk food and sweets....:grumble:

Now that is gross. Is it that don't care or don't think? My daughter is 3 and has never had soda. The bubbly thing she drinks is mineral water.

I had parents raised in the 50s and 60s. Most of my childhood didn't have soda readily available because it was considered a special treat...strangely enough, though, Koolaid and Crystal Light were most always around.

My daughter rolls her eyes every time that we are at the grocery store ("Mom, do you HAVE to read the label on EVERYTHING??). My constant mantra back to her is that you can't trust the food manufacturers to create only what is healthy for you - they will sell what ever you will BUY, but that doesn't make it healthy! And just because it says it's good for you on the front of the box, doesn't mean that all of the ingredients are healthy, either! All this 'education' is working, however...for the most part, she makes healthy choices and I even caught her reading the nutrition label on things she wanted to buy in the grocery!

I'd also like to share that my daughter's father (my ex-husband) died at the age of 38 from a heart attack brought on by clogged arteries. His main food staple? Fast food, fried food.
  • If we talk about our healthful choices they learn from us by example and understanding why we do what we do.
  • My cousin constantly eats out at McDonalds, and brings her kids with her.
Her son doesn't like certain foods now, and is turning into a picky eater because he isn't being exposed to certain foods.
He doesn't get excersise either, and just wants to play video games.
I can see him as a heart attack waiting to happen. /:

    Everyone was overweight.
    surprise.

My children get fast food as a "treat" maybe once or twice a week. They are never allowed soda to drink only milk, juice or water. And luckily my middle boy is all about the fruits and veggies... My oldest - not so much. But he at least makes the effort to eat a few bites of whatever I give him. He is more of a "meat" person.

It's really sad to me that some parents pride themselves on how "large" their babies are. All of mine have been on the small side - partially because of genes but also because I made/make sure not to overfeed them starting as infants. Is it really necessary for a four-month old to be drinking an 8 to 10 oz bottle?
  • FYI, the FTC is requesting public comment on a proposal having to do with marketing food to youth.
