So I had a huge lunch today, went out with the parents to a little latin restaurant. I came home, worked out for an hour, made myself a smoothie and decided I would have some beans for Supper. My mom looks at me and asks, "you're going to eat dinner?" (because you know the coffee and cookie she is eating is okay but god forbid I eat beans for Supper) and I reply, "yes I worked out for an hour I have some extra calories" to which my brother jumps in and goes, "doesn't that defeat the purpose? working out and still eating."
SOOOO I start explaining about eating back your workout calories (my net was in the 900's before my smoothie and beans for supper), I don't even finish until i'm interrupted again with them saying, "okay okay don't get angry, yeesh"
&I'm just standing there dumbfounded because I am not angry, just trying to explain to them what I know.
yikes!

This happens to me all the time. Somebody asks and if I answer, they don't want to hear it. It is easy to eat unhealthy and be uneducated about nutricion and working out0
-
People get offended when they shouldn't. Yes.... they seem to think that because you know something and they don't... you are being rude because they didn't realize it themselves. Don't worry about it, just remember that they'll have an attitude in the future too0
-
Can't say it has happened to me.. I only live with my partner and he is very encouraging.
I occassionally get people say you're eating that? I reply it's in my calories so yes.0 -
I got the "aren't you on a diet?" once from a co-worker.
I wanted to smack her.0 -
laugh it off....you will feel better...after all...it really doesnt matter0
-
That's why I don't even talk about stuff like this with most people. I didn't even tell most people I was trying to lose weight or took up running. I just ate what I wanted and did what I wanted. Occasionally I'll tell my boyfriend "let's go get ice cream, I went on a long run today and want a treat" and he usually is happy to join me since it means he gets ice cream too.0

Yep, it happens all the time. I learned to just ignore the questions/comments and do my thing. People don't want to hear it and I stop wanting to explain. I get to eat and lose weight and they , well I don't know what happens with them but whatever they are doing it doesn't seem to be working.0

that's happened to me too, I'm like, "nooo, i'm just eating healthy, if I want to have a cookie I can, I just choose not to right now."laugh it off....you will feel better...after all...it really doesnt matter
you're right, thanks0 -
Why even justify any of this with a response. Since when did it become anyone's business what any of us eat?
My mother (overweight), makes comments daily. I ignore. Because I know that I am healthier and more aware of myself than she will ever be, so for me, that's good enough. It's a waste of energy trying to explain these things to some people!0 -

I have that type of personality where I'd fire back at them. I'd be like...welllllll ...how many calories are in that cookie you are shoving in your mouth? Oh, you don't know....it's like 120 calories per cookie... want another one? lol
But yes, I get that too...not lately because I'm eating better than my parents. They made macaroni salad which consists of real mayo, bacon strips crunched up, elbow macaroni, and some fresh herbs....I wanted to scream out (use turkey bacon, whole wheat pasta, and light mayo!!)
I don't give them a reason to tell me I'm eating badly... I don't think your choice was unhealthy at all. Go you!0 -
Every once in a while I get the "I thought you were trying to eat better" from my wife- but thankfully not that often since it really gets under my skin. I think it goes back to when I didn't care much about my diet and she tried to be the food police.0

hahaha, oh that made me laugh.
yea I don't live with my parents, I am just visiting them this weekend but thinking about it now I am so glad I live on my own because this was always a constant struggle, my mom would always be, "oh are you going to eat that this late?" etc, just little remarks here and there that add up and bother me. I guess I can suck it up for the little while that I am here, I know I am going in the right direction0 -

there is nothing wrong with real bacon. only 35 cals a slice usually and turkey bacon should be shot on site0 -

Thats the answer right there. Dont even tell anyone, just go about your business, thats my way too.
Never heard anybody else do it that way.

Ew, give me your parents' macaroni salad over turkey bacon and light mayo any day! I'd rather have the real stuff than some processed nasty crap. :flowerforyou:
+1 for your parents for some good old fashioned cooking!0 -
I HATED the aren't you on a diet comment.
I shove whatever I was eating up their *kitten*.0 -
Some people simply don't like maths. Just keep doing what your doing!0
-
It seems I'm lucky enough to have friends that know how to be supportive without being the food police, because I haven't encountered those kinds of comments much. But in case I ever do, my stock response to "Should you be eating that?" is "Yes. *nom*"0
-
i get the "aren't u going to eat more?" from my husband's side of the family because they can clear two to three plates and i barely get through a quarter of a plate....the food is delicious but i believe in portion control, and healthy eating....just keep doing what u do0
-
You think that is bad? I went to the doctor because I have a suspected under-active thyroid. One of the symptoms being weight gain. I told the doctor that I was eating an average of1300 calories a day (my weight loss allowance is 1590). Answer was "eat less". Grrr.0

I got the 'are you not dieting anymore' comment from a friend a coupla months ago, I was having a milkshake with my lunch at a cafe (had sorted out my calories for the day and had space for it so enjoyed every mouthful!).
I said 'yep' and beamed happily. She clearly didn't know what to do with that so changed the subject and hasn't mentioned it to me since!
Hehe. Playing with people is fun.0 -
My family stopped arguing with me quite a long time ago. I don't know if it is the nasty looks that I throw them or the fact that I am now half the person I used to be, but it is nice to not have to justify what I do.
On the down-side...many of them don't understand my desire not to eat beef or pork (quite simply...it makes me ill so why would I), so often family dinners for me are BYOM. I just learned to deal with it. They look at me funny when I make the waiter earn his tip too...but I don't care...I tip well and I get what I want.0 -
this happens to me ALL THE TIME. My mother is constantly judging me eating little things throughout the day "you're REALLY hungry again?? thought you were trying to lose weight"
It's like mum, you have to eat to lose weight too. My mother is a perfect example of someone who eats very little but still is overweight, she eats so little.0 -
I told some people in the office that I was on a diet, what an idiot I am! Everytime I reach for the biscuit tin now I get told off, even though the last few times I have had a biscuit I have explained that I have accounted for it!!0
