Has anyone ever done a Spartan Race? I'm thinking about doing the 3+ race in Aug of this year. Someone tell me it's hard but not impossible to finish.

I am considering doing one next year 2013. I think it would be cool to do this race with my son. He would be 18.

I did a Spartan Sprint a year ago. I was part of 5 or 6 person team and was the last to finish in the team. The people that organize are very serious about it but it's still a fun event to do. That is if you are into running 3 miles uphill and a mile in a pond carrying buckets, jumping over fire, doing burpees when you can't complete an obstacle, balance beams, crawling under barb wire, jumping ditches, scaling walls.

That all sounds great to me! I just have to get fit enough for it. My goal is to work in that direction and hopefully participate in a Spartan Sprint or Tough Mudder in 2013 or 2014 (Provided the world still exists after Dec 21st 2012), depending on where I am at in February or March of 2013. If I am not ready in 2013 then I will continue until 2014.

I just did one a couple of weeks ago, my first Spartan (did Warrior Dash and Mudder before) and had a blast! It was challenging but I was able to get over so many fears and the help from others was incredible!

I just ran the Tx Spartan on Saturday. It is tough, but not impossible to complete. Definitely run it with a team or at least a partner so you can help each other through some of the more difficult obstacles and start practicing your burpees now.

If you are looking for a less intense run for your first mud/obstacle run then I would recommend beginning with a Warrior Dash and then moving up to a Tough Mudder or Spartan.

I would like to do one - the Pennsylvania race in July was recently on Groupon - but the $15 "spectator fee" seems ridiculously high. You'd think they make enough $$$ on the entry fee, vendors, parking that they wouldn't need to charge extra for something like that. It's not like they can see the whole race.

I'm signed up for Super Spartan in August in Virginia (mid-Atlantic). Have done a Warrior Dash. Going to do P90X2 this summer (possibly a hybrid with some Insanity) and try to run 10-15 miles per week (3-5 mile runs 2x during the week and one longer run of 6-10 miles on the weekend).

I did the Spartan Race in Ottawa yesterday for the second year in a row and had a blast! The Spartan Sprint is challenging but totally worth doing. My husband and I partner up every year and we push ourselves to do better than the year before (plus he is a great help to me over the walls as my upper body strength doesn't compare to his, and I keep him motivated in the running portions!) The biggest thing about the Spartan Race is that you have to go in with a "it doesn't matter what they throw at me, I'm going to try it" attitude and be willing to get DIRTY. I found mud in places I didn't even know I had after the race! (and found a new patch of mud in my belly button after my second shower). The adrenaline helps with everything else! And if you really can't do it the burpees penalties are a good option!

Only other pieces of advice I have for Spartan Race are this:

    1) Tie your shoes on TIGHT otherwise you WILL lose them in the mud.
    2) Wear clothing that you are willing to throw out, because you may just have to.
    3) Be prepared for scratches and bruises, battle wounds are just part of the game!

    CAN SOMEONE PLEASE CONFIRM THIS?

lol I run the spartan race in Toronto this weekend. Are the burpees the ones that include the pushups?

Also Miracole, if you get this in time - what would you say were the hardest obstacles you encountered - and any tips in particular for them?

    Thanks for your advice!
