I'm not sure what the question is .....I'm a pear ..... I can be successful at weight loss ...... but I will STILL be a pear when I get to goal.

This is not true for all pears ...it's just genetics, look at your family members. You won't make your thighs bigger by working out, women just aren't designed to build a lot of muscle.

I've been looking this up too for the past few days. I've read that the best exercises for this body type is swimming, cycling, running etc. a form of cardio that will help lose fat off the butt/thighs/hips, also doing squats, lunges etc. but can't spot reduce! Strength traning for the upper body will help the body become more proportioned (:

I'm doing Jillian Michaels' Body Revolution atm, not lost any weight/inches yet though; only on week 2 (:

I am a pear shape and, while I am a yo-yo dieter and exerciser and always gain 10 pounds during winter because all I do is lay on the couch and eat hot dish (I'm from Minnesota), I have had the most success in toning and shrinking my lower body come springtime with Pilates and cardio. Pilates really does a terrific job at building long, lean muscles. Everyone is different, but for me, I do see my butt and thighs get larger and bulkier when I lift weights. With Pilates, you just get toned and smaller. It's amazing.

I personally hate running, so for cardio I like the elliptical and walking on the treadmill (playing with the incline and speed levels to get the best calorie burn). Also cardio kickboxing, zumba, and barre class (which combines yoga, Pilates, cardio, and sculpting). And like ell_jay said, upper body strength training CAN help you look more proportioned!

If you're looking for some workouts you can do at home, I highly recommend the "Exhale: Core Fusion" series of DVDs. I have the Thighs & Glutes one and the Pilates Plus one, and they're both incredible. Each DVD is broken up into 5 10-minute workout segments, so it's very easy to squeeze in a quick workout if you're short on time!

It isnt likely that any exercise you do will increase the size of your hips and thighs. Embrace your shape but try to firm them up. I am a pear and for me I need to lift heavy to see results. For years everyone told me to do lots of reps of leg lifts etc... No it didnt work, lots of cardio, clean eating and good weight training will get you results. Probably still going to be a pear but pears are awesome!

Dammit! I used to do Pilates but I gave up.. Maybe I should start up again alongside JMBR!
