Eating the proper protein and getting enough water is essential.
Avoid soy based protein when possible.0 -
When I first started I also had this issue, but since I started drinking tea daily (at least 3 cups) I find that I have returned to normal. I also eat plenty of raw fruits and veggies so that may also be helpful. If all else fails, it could just be your system and so you could use the Smooth Moves tea that was suggested (I have tried it and it works)0

MIRALAX! works great! I have contant problems, wondering if its too much protein, not enough iron? idk, have never been really regular in years! I asked the pharmacist the other day if miralax was safe to take on a daily, regular basis, he said doctor recommended. I just dumped the mother load yesterday after taking this for a few days, it really works! (sorry if that was tmi.....lol) Good Luck! I hate that feeling! I was literally doubled over last Friday/Saturday with pain....
you shouldnt recommend laxatives....you can become dependant on them.
If anything, Psyllium Husks is a much more NATURAL fiber supplement to take.
You should try to get at least 30g of fiber a day, and remember - the more you exericse, the more fiber you need.
Water is helpful. And typically, upping your fat intake for a day and clean you out.
If I were to eat MFP's recommended 17g of fiber - I WOULD NEVER POOP (i'm prone to constipation). So I set mine for 30g, and try to exceed it.0 -
Ground flax....I put it in cereal, or my tuna fish and it has zero flavor or prune juice or prunes....those are the only things that help my 15 year old daughter after her surgery....hope it helps!0

In the morning before you eat or drink anything else, a glass of warm water followed by a cup of hot water with a squirt of lemon juice. Real lemon juice is recommended, but I use bottled and have great results!
Also Metamucil every night.0 -
I totally know what you are going through- I have been dealing with it for over 2 years. I would say the best thing that has helped me is taking miralax every day along with senokot. This has helped more than anything else. I drink tons of water, eat fruits, veggies, and fiber and get my exercise....but I was still constipated. The two meds have been a life saver!0

I was going to post something like...this...but didn't want to get my head blown off...Miralax should not be used for long term cures to constipation...you do indeed become dependent on it after longterm use...Which would suck0 -
Hi...I take Activia every day. One usually works well enough for me, but I think some say to take 2 yogurts per day. Because of the lower fat intake since watching my calories, I would say I'm not having a bm everyday, but I do not feel constipated and usually go every other day. Coffee usually works when I have it with eggs, go figure....We usually have a family breakfast every Sun morning with eggs and a pot of coffee (and I have my Activia)....after we have all visited and I'm cleaning up, it's like clockwork....I usually 'gotta go'.
My mom had serious constipation after a recent surgery and her home nurse told her she takes Miralax everyday. So, my mom has taken that when she has problems and does take a stool softener everyday. I think she feels it is no longer a problem...even as before the surgery when she had occasional bouts with it.
Good luck...Hope all the advice helps you.0 -
If you are like me and don't want to resort to over the counter tricks, my advice is to try to get into a habit of having a couple prunes everyday. At first it didn't make any difference but once it became a routine I've not had much trouble. And as for the increase in fiber for me it too is a bell curve, too little and I stop, too much and ouch! I drink tons of water at least 8 cups but try to exceed 12 everyday. I only use a laxative if I am in a lot of pain or its just been far too long...0

I have used "Dieter's Drink" -- which is basically an herbal laxative tea found at the Chinese grocery stores -- it has Chinese Mallow and Senna Leaf. This is what the box looks like: http://www.unclelee.com/product_info.php?products_id=404 Just plan to spend a day at home. I wouldn't do this more than once a month though -- I imagine that people would build up a dependance otherwise.
After you're all cleared out, Benefibre in low-cal yoghurt once a day before bedtime is great. I would also recommend 2-3L of water, and a massive orange a day -- these usually help keep me regular...0 -
I have had this issue my entire life and no amount of fiber, laxatives, water or water helped .... that was until 3 months ago.
I switched my enture diet to pure whole foods, no (or very minimal amounts) of processed foods and sugars. And I cut out all dairy which was very hard for me as i LOVE milk!
I thought it would be very hard especially because my husband is NOT on the bandwagon, but after doing a ton of research and educating myself on the benifits of it and problems with the other foods, i found myself never craving the crap.
The result... I GO EVERY DAY!!!! it has changed my life and is amazing! Never knew this is how "normal" people feel.
Another thing that contributes is my morning green drink:
- 1 spoonful ground flax seed
- 1 spoonful chia seeds
- 1 serving hemp and pea protein powder
- a cup - cup and a half of frozen fruit ( i cut up bananas and apples and freeze them)
- a cup of spinich
- a cup of kale
- a cup of unsweetended almond milk
- water and ice to consistancy desired
(sometimes i add cocoa powder)0 -
Hi - I also used to suffer from this issue and I have found that introducing more veggies is key in keeping my bowels working. Try increasing your vegtable intake everyday. I generally eat a spinach salad with bell peppers, broccoli and cucumbers everyday for lunch at work. And I also bring apples and bananas to snack on. It keeps me full, it's not a lot of calories and it allows my bowels to operate correctly. It's worth a try.0

this happened to me too. I gave up all the stuff that helped me to go like bread, rice and potatoes. Quinoa was my big discovery here. I looooove it and it is just like rice but it has a lot of protein in it too. I am a very healthy eater and ate a ton of fiber but it just didn't want to pass through till I started the quinoa. Good luck, it is not a fun problem to have. I actually got a huge hemeroid at one point because of it and I survived 3 pregnancies without hemeroids. Give quinoa a try, it is a non grain grain, and doesn't have gluten in it.0

I have diverticulis so I take Miralax everyday to keep things moving and it works like magic.
But, I think the best thing to do is get 25-35 grams of fiber a day in your diet. I follow Tanya Zuckerbrot's "F-Factor Diet" and it helps me up my fiber intake everyday. That and A LOT of water to keep things moving!!
I also have deverticulis, does the Miralax bloat you? I have heard it can do that.0 -
Miralax isn't a laxative. My oldest daughter suffers from gluten intolerance which leaves her extremely constipated all of the time and her doctor recommended Miralax for her when she was 2 years old. I did a lot of research and so did her doctor and GI specialist, we found that it will not cause her cramps and it is not something that she will become dependent on! She has been taking it regularly for 4 years now and it works wonders for her, plus she is able to even go 3 or 4 days at a time with out it now and is very regular even then!MIRALAX! works great! I had a big problem with this... But healthier lifestyle has helped. More veggies+fruits; drinking a warm cup of tea in the morning and after eating (MAKE SURE you don't drink cold after eating! O:) and that's what I've just been doing differently, eating less meat is helpful as well0

I started taking Fish Oil Caplets (Just because they're good for me) and one happy side affect was that it fixed this problem So, you might wanna try picking up some Fish Oil Caplets
This, I have suffered from this chronically even before I was on this journey. I was not uncommon for me to go a week. I too have a difficult time taking laxatives. I feel really bad all day. The suppositories are good for immediate relief. But, I have found the most success by taking 2 fish oil capsules every night. A nice side effect is that my cholesterol is fabulous too.0 -

((((( MiraLAX laxative is clinically proven to relieve occasional constipation and soften stool, with no harsh side effects.))))
LOL@ No "harsh" side effects..
but yea ...I got that from their website....
MiraLAX IS a Laxative and like all laxitives you should not take them longterm as your body can become dependent....
Benefiber or Metamucil should be your weapon of choice with Lot's of water0 -

I am going to have to respectfully disagree with you since your are not a gastroenterologist. I have diverticulus and Miralax is recommened to me by my doctor. Diverticulus is extremely painful when it flares up and can land you in the hospital. I have tried a couple of products from the Renew Life website which are all natural and organic but I don't get the same efficacy.
I do agree with you about lots of water and eating a high fiber diet.0 -
I just posted this same topic on my page, because I'm so confused! Before, when I ate McD's and ice cream and high fat/low fiber, I was fine. Now that I'm eating more than enough of a variety of fiber including prunes every day, drinking 100+ ounces of only water a day, and exercising a minimum of 30 minutes a day, my body hangs on to every last thing and I'm so uncomfortable! I broke down and had some Miralax tonight, then went for a bike ride...still waiting....0
