Disappointed by Lab Results

I have been changing my lifestyle with nutrion and excercise since February. I have lost slow and steady 14 lbs. I had my HRA this week and was looking forward to seeing better results. Instead while I'm eating better some of my results were worse and aside from my BP & Sugar being much better. The rest I saw little or no change or worse.
Really feeling discouraged. I thought by eating healthier & losing weight I would see improvements. I was only my cycle would that make a difference in the results or how long before I should see improvements??

I assume you are talking abouy your cholesterol, trigylcerides, stuff like that?
Your "diet" can effect your lab results for quite some time, up to 6 weeks, I'd say. I don't know what dietary changes you've made so it's hard to really comment. If you are eating a healthy diet with minimal animal fat and still getting higher levels than you want, I'd recommend taking a Fish Oil supplement. It had a huge impact on my #'s.0 -
Thank you. I have used fish oil in the past. I will start taking that again and see if that helps. Yes healthier food, more vegetables, fruits, low carbs, low fat, low sugar. I thought because I was losing weight that the healthier eating would show a bigger difference. I'll have another HRA in 3 months hopefully will see better improvement. Thanks again.0

It would help to have specifics here: what lab tests were "worse"?0

Don't be disappointed you have a lot more weight to lose and as you do you will start seeing improvements. If your cholesterol results are worse and you are a low carber just go easy on saturated fats as some people more prone to cholesterol issues. Others can have a lot of saturated fats with no problems.0

Were you appropriately fasting for your tests? For triglycerides, they actually recommend a full TWELVE hours of fasting, rather than a typical 8!0

Yeah if we know the results you aren't happy with it's easier to see/suggest what you should be doing differently also open up your diary could help as well!0 -

I had to work with a dietician and my Dr to get mine to move. The weight was only a part of it, a big part, but still, my diet needed to improve to hit some of my targets. It took almost 7 months before my sugars and chloestrol were under control.0 -
I managed to get my cholesteral levels down to healthy this year after 7 months of weight loss and healthy eating, plus I gave up smoking over 2 years before. I had previously been told by my doctor that it takes time for your changes in lifestyle to filter through, so it may be an idea to get them done in 6 months times and compare results then.0

It will happen just hang in there. I know a woman who had terrible numbers and she decided to only add exercise to her routine. She didn't change anything else. Her numbers changed dramatically. Have you been incorporating exercise into your lifestyle? If you are doing everything right, keep at it. Sometimes genetics play a bigger role than we would like them to. Good for you for staying on top of your numbers.0

My numbers got a little better after losing 35 lbs, but the drastic difference came about after really ramping up the exercise and focusing on body re-composition (fat loss, retaining muscle). I eat a lot of animal protein, and my cholesterol is now good. About 75% of my caloric intake is "clean," but I allow for treats.
Keep it up- you WILL see changes, but it takes time. :flowerforyou:0 -
They say the numbers change a LITTLE every 10 pounds you lose if you rely on weight loss alone for the change. Triglycerides are elevated by high fats and candy/sweets. LDL is where genetics play a part, as well as all that you ate before. Significant changes are needed to make budge, especially if you are high in fat personally (didn't know how else to say it!) HDL is affected by age and exercise, diet, and estrogen, so depending on your age and your activity level, it can vary, but it moves very "slowly" because the number is so low to begin with.
I lost over 50 pounds before I saw a drop in my LDL and Tri's and a raise to HDL.... It sounds like maybe you just had higher expectations for what you've been doing than was appropriate. Time to step back and consider everything, not just what you THOUGHT would happen.0
