Has anyone used creatine as part of their weight loss and fitness regime? I'm told that it can add weight by water retention.

I did some research that says teens should not use but I don't really know anyone using it. Both my bodybuilding son and my husband's bodybuilding friend rely more on straight up protein and supplement with protein shakes.

I've used it. It works great. And yes you'll retain some water.

I use it all the time its great stuff it really helped with my physique and body composition, strength everything I love the stuff, I think protein is the most important and creatine is a close second for me, I use Cell-Tech because of the sugars in it which gives me the insulin spike im looking for post workout. truly awesome stuff

Upon starting creatine, it can cause water retention until your kidneys get used to it (take the same amount of creatine each day, DO NOT LOAD creatine). It also helps to get a high quality creatine (crea-pure/German grade). If you have kidney impairment or get dehydrated easily, don't use it (stay hydrated when taking creatine). Take with or without food/sugar, it doesn't matter just plenty of water.

What about Creatine Kre-Alkalyn? Supposed to have no retention or Bloating, I have used it, albeit a while ago, and thought it was pretty good. Purple K or something like that (brand name) Im sure there are others.

But not sure what form compares to monohydrate etc.... or what others have experienced...

I've thought about using it, short-term, for weight loss. My thought was it might speed up my metabolism sooner by helping decrease my body fat sooner.

I've heard you need to take it with some carbs to help it get into your muscles and lots of water. I've also heard you want the high quality stuff.

  • Depending on what supps you take, for instance MHP preworkout has (i think) 60g creating can make you bloat due to water weight. Creatine is great for muscle building but you will retain water. But i have used Creatine Kre-Alkalyn in pill form which worked wonders because of its non-bloating properties.

not sure where you got this info, but it's not true

go get some monohydrate. preferably a brand with the 'creapure' label on it.
take 3-5 grams a day. take a small scoop. put it in your mouth and wash it down with water.
you don't need to take it with carbs or grape juice or sugar or anything. that's all a bunch of bro science.

Is Creapure a brand, or is it a Creatine Standard for measuring purity (ie: the best)?

i am not sure how to post pics, but it's the green "C" label you will see on certain brands

I 've taken 5g's a day for a long time now.. it seems to really give me that last rep or 2 on the end. From what I understand it draws water into your muscles from other parts of your body which is why you need to drink a lot of water (and for you kidneys) or you can get dehydrated. I've heard people say you will hold water as if saying you wil be bloated like if you consumed more sodium than usual but I think this is a misconception. I've never had water retention in my face or stomach from Creatine..I add high simple carbs right after my workouts anyway and that's when I take creatine too so to what extent insulin drives delivery or not it can't hurt.. Creapure is wholesale creatine made in Germany and is known for quality control and testing very pure so it is good to see that logo on the label of whatever brand you are buying.. Creatine is also helpful in brain function and memory.. when vegetarians supplemented creatine for several months, their IQ and memory test scores actually rose... kinda crazy..

Kre-alkalyn is just creatine that has been buffered to a high pH with sodium bicarbonate. Yet the price tag is pretty high despite sodium bicarbonate being dirt cheap (yes, kre-alkalyn is a scam). Seriously, just add sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) to creatine if it really helps you with GI issues. But, creatine monohydrate on its own has been studied most, so that's what I would stick with.

The stuff makes me look all soft and it did make me go up in weight from the all water retention @3-5g a day. It really gave me no noticeable results or benefits other than that. I suppose I still get a little through my food ie fish and such but I don't supplement it.
