What can I do to help relieve sore knees? I've added walking/jogging in the evenings to my routine and since I have started to develop sore knees... It's not unbearable, but it is uncomfortable. Anything I can do to help relieve them?

Go to a store that specializes in selling only running shoes. They will perform a gait analysis and suggest shoes that will be the best for you. Buy them, even if they are expensive. Wear them only for your runs. Jogging is running, and running is a sport that actually requires decent equipment. Your joints will thank you.

When I get sore after a run, even though I wear my good running sneakers, I will take a shower and then, at the end, turn the water to full blast cold and aim it only at my legs. The cold burst followed by the natural warming your body does over the next few hours will drive the chemicals that cause some soreness out of you legs.

Peppermint essential oil will work wonders. 3-5 drops in 1 tsp of a carrier oil (Like sweet almond oil, olive oil or fractionated coconut oil) per knee. I also have a blend called Deep Blue that is specifically made for aches and pains. You can message me if you want more info on that.

Did you sore knees start after you bought your new shoes? If so, I agree with the other poster about getting new shoes. My knees got a lot better after I changed my shoes plus I take The Vitamin Shoppe Bio-Cell Collagen. After I started taking it the soreness reduced. If I don't take it for a couple of days I notice a difference. Of course, my knees are a lot older than yours.

I edited my post above to include an easy version of ice baths as well. I hope your knees feel better soon!

For some quick, temporary I wrap a heating pad on my knee with an ace bandage for a bit

Ice will usually give you temporary relief.

Surprisingly runners knee is often caused by muscular imbalances in hips & glutes, here's a link to a page on runnersworld.com with a lot of useful information:

    Hope this helps.

Get a foam roller - sports/fitness stores will have them. Ask them to show you how to use it to relieve knee pain - I can't describe it accurately enough for you, but it has worked WONDERS on my poor knees. It hurts at first, but the relief is fantastic.

Arnica cream is good topically. Glucosamine is awesome.

I have a bad knee. When I went to see a specialist he told me no jumping jacks and no jogging/running. He told me those are really bad for my knee. He said that I should stay away from those. I have a slight bow in my right knee that makes the impact on my knee wrong. You may have the same problem as I do.

Swimming would help to strengthen your knees but should be pain free since it's a non-weight bearing activity.
Cycling is also a great way to strengthen the muscles around the joint.

Awesome shoes ... # 1. ICE. Not heat. 20 mins on / 20 mins off. Icy Hot Roll on. Is this new exercise for you ?? Maybe soft tissues adjusting to new activity you are engaging in ? No prior knee probs or injuries?

I'm pretty hip to knees. Lost my right lateral meniscus ... HUGE OUCH. Resulted in TKR. I'm 1 yr. postoperative. Take care of those knees!!!!!!

Exercises to strengthen quads and hamstrings !!! good strong quads support the knees
NSAIDs ..such as Aleve. Fish oil very good ..daily

    Try out this tool:
    http://www.emedx.com/dol/index.htm

to help you figure out exactly what the problem is. I wouldn't suggest any treatment without knowing the cause, except the ice maybe.

My knees were sore when I came back to running after being away for two years. I went to a personal trainer who said that the muscles supporting my knee were weak, and that was why it was sore. The muscles were not only weak, they were no longer strong enough to do their job properly, which added strain to the joint which meant knee pain. So she had me do adductor and abductor exercises! The best one was simple and fun. She took a rubber exercise band, a smallish one, and placed about 5" above my ankles, and then I had to do an energetic sideways shuffle (aka sashay, side skip, you get the idea), across the room and back. The force of the stable leg worked the adductors, and the pulling-sideways leg's abductors were working. Going back the other way does the other side. It works best if your torso is in a semi-squat pose, so grasp hands in front of your chest, chest forward, butt out, slight bend to the knees, and sideways-GO! If you're in a shorter room, just do more laps than if you're in a long room.

Also, and I'm not sure what your other routines are, if you use weight machines be careful of the leg ones. It's really easy to hyper-extend or rely on the joint instead of the muscle when using a number of the machines.

    Hope that helps!

I didn't start jogging until after I bought them, so i can't say one way or the other if it's the shoes, but I honestly don't think it is. These shoes feel like they were made for me lol.

Jogging is one of the worse things you can do to relieve knee pain. If you could use and elliptical for exercise that takes the pressure off your joints. You should also try icing them after a walk or exercise. Try some Mortin as well. Good luck

If you've just started jogging you're going to have to be patient. A lot of basic soreness (like you said, nothing unbearable, just uncomfortable) is due to the muscles that surround your knees not being strong enough (same reason squats can make your knees "hurt"). As these muscles get stronger they will hurt less.

For now, try to run on grass or a track vs. the street or concrete to help reduce impact.

i had really sore knees to the point i couldn't even kneel down because i would have to use all my arm strength to get up! i went to a physiotherapist and with her help she gave me exercises (stretches) to loosen my extremely tight quads and my LT band (pretty sure of title, it runs up the whole side of your leg from kneecap) my muscles were soooo tight that the ones that were attached to my kneecap were pulling the cap out of place (that's the cracking noise- bone-on-bone) i also had the issue where i had really weak non-existant muscles because of the bigger ones taking over. anywho, i still wear a knee brace when i do knee heavy exercises (squats etc) but i can do pretty much anything with little to no pain. i can even walk up a flight of stairs without wincing. btw i'm in my 30's not my 60's or70's.
i got a referral from my doctor so then the majority would be covered by insurance.
    good luck

Iliotibial Band - IT for short. It's the source of all of my problems too. Proper IT band stretches and warming up (vs just taking off at full speed b/c I thought warming up was for sissies) have solved the problem for me almost completely.

Look up on youtube about running form. Look for Pose method or forefoot running. When you "jog" and land on your heels, you stress your joints. If you learn to run on your forefoot it takes a lot of the stress of your joints.

I did this (my form still needs work but it's better) and now I have no knee pain.

Also, like some of the other said, muscle imblances can cause issues. If your insurace covers PT, see if you can get seen by a doctor and then get 4 weeks of PT. They will help identify if you have weak areas in your legs.

Try some cheapo knee 'braces' from the drugstore..you know the compression ones that slide on?

Like this but it doesn't even have to have an open patella:

    http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&tok=3FmtIuc5jMKI9xe6bVFERA&cp=7&gs_id=7l&xhr=t&q=knee+brace&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.r_qf.,cf.osb&biw=1199&bih=779&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=10592709136608143578&sa=X&ei=aEetT6TeFMqwiQL34LD2Aw&sqi=2&ved=0CKACEPICMAQ

And ice right away after you run.
