Hoping all those who don't choose to starve themselves can offer some advice/support please as I have a LONG way to go on my weight loss journey weighing in at a whopping 257 lbs. After reading the posts decided not to follow the MFP guidelines after I was delighted the first week to lose 6lbs straight off following 1600 calories but then realising my bmr was 1890. The next week I upped my calories to 10 x body weight 2570 and I am going into my third week and even though it was totm stayed the same throughout, went up a couple of pounds but now they have come off and am down one pound in total from where I started. I am going to wait it out another week because at my weight am thinking should be able to lose 4lbs in a month. At the end of next week I am thinking of UPPING my calories by another 10 per cent. I am trying to find my maintenance by the way doing all this (the point at which I don't lose/don't gain). I do some walking about 20 minutes most days and I go on my aero pilates machine for about 20 minutes, although this last week I had pain from my sciatic nerve so could not do even this. Due to the lack of exercise etc am just hoping I am still on the right track. I am in this for the long haul but feel guilty eating this much, weighing this much and doing not a lot. By the way I am a female, 46 and have yo yo'd most of my life. Thank you for reading. I would also like to add people as friends who believe eating more is the way to beating this cycle.

I wasn't clear *why* you are trying to find your maintenance calories ? You can calculate them from the rate of loss - I use a weight tracking app Libra that works out a moving average scale weight and also expresses the loss as a calorie deficit. If you know what you eat and the deficit then you have the maintenance value.

As you lose weight maintenance calories will come down too, so you'll have to repeat your experiment periodically if you have to establish it by experiment. It probably takes a month to know you're at maintenance as body weight fluctuates +/- 2lbs at least.

I will look into that app, thanks for your reply! I was looking to find my maintenance to ensure I was eating enough to lose fat and not just water etc and read with a lot of weight to lose it is better to start off with a higher amount so you can cut from that if necessary and MVP was giving me 200below my bmr
