Weight lifting crash course

Any dvd's or any tips on weight lifting for beginners? I was under the impression that you needed to lift heavy to gain muscle, but the trainers at the gym had me lift like 5 lb dumbbells? I signed up for personal training, but for financial reasons, imma have to cancel it :-(. So bummed. Can I get some instruction from a DVD I can pick up at a library or a YouTube video? What are good ones? I want a Brazilian bum and that shredded but not bulky look, thanks.

    You want a DVD?

Look up Mark RIppetoe's DVD. I highly suggest the book as well

    Starting Strength.

I got my wife on the program. She's been doing it for... 3 weeks with no previous strength training.
Today she'll be ripping 125+ lbs off the ground.
Throwing 80+lbs on her back and doing full squats...

Now think about those 5lb dumbbells your PT had you curling.

    You get the idea..

get a weight set off of craigslist and look into starting strength, stronglifts, or another full-body barbell based program.

you won't get bulky. women can't without steroids and/or fat gain.

Don't worry about getting bulky. You won't gain significant muscle mass unless you eat at a calorie surplus and/or use steroids. Gaining large quantities of muscle isn't easy for any one and especially not women. I tried to gain muscle by eating 3000 calories a day and doing a hypertrophy program (not the 5x5 I just linked) and all I gained was 10lbs in 4 months and probably only 5 of that was muscle.

Lifting is a marathon, not a sprint.
