Weight GAIN GOAL as a man

Hi, I am a man trying to gain weigt. Every time I start an excersise regime I lose weight and am hoping this site can help me track my food to make sure I'm eating enough.
Thing is - it says my daily goal is 1590 calories. Is this enough providing I eat back the excersise calories? I was expecting it to say 2500 or similar.
Any advice appreciated, thanks.
Adam.

Best of luck on your goal of gaining. I know what its like to not be able to gain weight easily. I finally had success when I shot for around 3000 cals. a day. I am 5' 8" and my starting weight was around 145 lbs.
After about 3 months of close to 3000 cals. a day, limited cardio and reduced reps during weight training (trying to target 8-12 reps max before muscle failure) my weight went to 158 lbs. Now of course some of this is fat and I have an increase in my mid section, but like you I have trouble gaining weight and loss it fast with an exercise program which targets weight loss so I know I can lose the excess fat and hopefully keep the gains I made muscle wise.
You can try adding 500 cals. to the recommended daily goal for 2 weeks and add 200 cals. each week until you find your "zone" where you gain weight by taking in more cals. than you end up burning each day.
I hope this gives you an idea of where to start.0 -

What have you got your settings on, because that sounds like a 'trying to lose weight' amount of calories to me? Maintenance is more calories than that, so definitely check the settings0 -
cut & paste the output of the Goals tool so we can see what it's up to0

Hi thanks very much.I am 5ft 7 and weight 73.5kg (162lb) and I set it to gain 0.5lb per week with my goal as 80kg (176lb). This is to start with I'd like to put on more.
Part of the problem is I have natural high blood pressure so I must maintain a healthy weight and a diet low in fat and pretty much 0 saturated fat.
Cardio is essential to keep my heart helthy and fend off future issues with my high bood pressure (I'm 43). But I would also like to put on muscle so it's quite challenging.
Any advice on the below calories and/or foods high in calories but low in fat is appreciated - I agree surely i have to eat more than 1590 calories per day!?
If you follow this plan...

As a reference point - I am 6ft tall and currently weigh around 185lbs.
I do very intense cardio 3 times a week which totals around 4 hours. I also do 3x1hr weights sessions each week and these are also intense.
in order to gain at a rate of around 0.5-1lb/week I need to eat in excess of 4000 calories.0 -
Thanks for the reply, its clear that the 1790 calories per day is way low. I checked 4 websites with required calorie calculator and for my height/weight/age/activity I should be eating 2,300 to stand still.
So I need to ramp it up to at least 3000 per day with some healthy foods.
Really appreciate the advice though.0 -
Make sure you're eating enough protein also. Don't use MFP's reccommendation.0

I just went in and entered your stats and it said 2300.0

Whenever I see a guy who is built, which is fairly often now I live at the gym, I am completely humbled by the massive amount of work that goes into building that much muscle.

That sounds super low. I'm a chic trying to gain, I'm 5'4", 102lbs and I have my MPF settings maxed out (highest on everything) and that puts me at 2280. That's a 500 surplus on reg days and eat an extra 250 surplus on exercise days, and I'm just gaining 1 lb a week if I'm lucky, so I really think you should be up much much much higher.0

Just a few quick thoughts. Typically you can multiply your weight by 16-18 to get a decent maintence number which for you will be much higher than 2,000 calories. Start at around 3,000 calories and add 500 calories if you don't gain any weight in 2 wks. Your protien is wayyy too low as well. Bump that up to 1 gram/ lb of body weight. Decrease your carbs and fats from there. I typically eat 4,250 calories on my slow bulk cycle with 300 grams of protein a day.0
