Fat loss

With 50 lbs to lose, should I focus more on cardio right now? Nothing seems to be moving much. The scale or the meaurements.

    I have strictly done cardio (running on the treadmill) since I began in January 2012 and I've lost 31 lbs. Today I'll start 30 DS b/c I want to switch it up and see if I can get more results. I think you just need to find what fits into your schedule that you will do regularly and stick with it and I'm sure you'll see good results soon enough. GOOD LUCK!

    I know that weight training changes your body, tones, etc. I DO want those results too. Maybe I need to keep doing the Jillian videos and add cardio in also and then I can work on fat loss and muscle gain at the same time.

    I almost exclsively did cardio in the pat and yes, it burns off the fat, but I never toned up so I always stayed a bit "jiggly". This time (which will be the LAST time I ever have to shed a large amount of weight because I'm never getting fat again!) I'm doing cardio AND weights - and I'm working towards lifting heavy. i'm definitely seeing and feeling a difference and Im' confident I'll be happier with my "jiggly bits" this tmie round because there'll be fewer of them. ;)

    i have done a combo of weights and cardio since august 2011 and have lost 40 lbs. i like the definition i am seeing with the weights, however my weight-loss has stalled and i am anxious about losing my last 8 lbs. i am going to switch to cardio-only for a bit to mix it up and see if that helps spark me through this plateau. but overall, i love weight-lifting and highly recommend it! i am looking forward to reading more responses, though, as my husband & i were just talking about this weight vs cardio debate on weight loss.

    I don't have much weight to lose but I've been doing Jillian 30 day shred along with a larger amount of cardio and abs at the gym. So far it seems to be helping. But I must say I've been feeling a bit burned out this past day or so. So today was my recovery day :)

    Yeah I think you can get an overall higher calorie burn by focusing on cardio early on. I know muscle burns more fat all day long though, so if you have very little that may be something you want to add in. Having said that, if I only have 1 hour/day to work out, I can burn way more calories doing cardio in that hour than lifting weights. And really building muscle is nearly impossible while eating at a calorie deficit. Your body will use some stored fat to build muscle with if you eat a lot of protein, but you will not see significant muscle gains eating at a deficit to lose weight.

    I have lost 39 pounds overall since December, but started hardcore 8 weeks ago and have lost 23 of those 39 it in those 8 weeks. In the past (almost) 4 weeks since I joined the gym I've been doing weight training 3xs a week, and quite a bit of cardio, and the past 4 weeks I have seen the best results AND the most changes in my body.

    Years ago I lost 60 pounds and got to my goal weight just doing cardio, but my body fat % was still over 30% even at what BMI says was well in range of a normal weight for my height. I was skinny fat from not doing any weight training and just doing cardio. I always "planned" on strength training at some point but it never happened. This time I decided it needed to be a priority.

    IMO (for me anyway) I not only want to lose weight but I want to look darn good. For me that measn working my butt of in the weight room as well as doing cardio.

    Not quiet true. You can build muscle while in calorie deficit, you just have to have very high protein intake and low carb intake, that way protein goes directly into the muscle and your body is using the fat for burning energy. Yes, you use more calories while doing cardio, but if you dont build up your muscle mass, your metabolism remains slower,while resting. This is what muscles are for, to keep metabolism going fast even when you rest. That means, we all should do it both, cardio to burn up the fat faster, and strengt to build up the muscle and get the metabolism going

    If i was you, id start lifting now, i wish i had 12 months ago. Now im ''skinny fat'' because all i ever did was cardio.
