Is Facebook Messenger That Popular?

I was surprised to see this story on Slashdot. It talks about how the use of Facebook Messenger is starting to cause a decline in text messaging. I find that somewhat hard to believe, because it seems that phone texting would still be faster and more convenient. If it is true, maybe the carriers will reduce their pricing of texting plans, since it costs them practically nothing to deliver text messages.

How many of you use Facebook Messenger, and how much do you use it?

I'd never heard of it until this post. It's a mobile app?

I don't use the FB messenger at all. I actually make sure as soon as I log onto my computer it has me as "Offline." Also, I deleted the app for my phone to avoid it notifying me of messages all day. I prefer texting, and I am about done with FB because it's too time consuming!

Yes, they have mobile apps for it. You can message other people who have the app, or are using the Facebook web site.

Ditto. I only have family and close friends on mine...just to keep them up to date on my life. I am always 'offline'...I don't have the time to be on and chat. I have more important things to do...such as waste time on MFP, lol.

I've used the IM function in FB, but only rarely, and I haven't done it for years and years. I mean, if I were 14, I could see myself IM'ing on a regular basis. But as an adult? Um, no.

Rarely. but that is because I don't have a smartphone.

Just every once in a while I get on facebook (on the computer) and someone who is on their mobile will message me.

I have it on my phone, but I don't use it the same as I'd use texting.

I use it, but I text more. It's fast though.

Reduce their costs? You get like unlimited text for $10-15, can't really beat that.

I hate it. It requires me to actually hold a conversation with people and I can only use the excuse that I wasn't at my computer so many times. Mine is set at offline permanently. To be honest I hate Facebook in general.

Wouldn't be surprised. Facebook has killed Myspace, AIM, and others before it...lol

I can't stand FB messenger. I am always offline with it. I don't have the mobile app either because it crashed all the time when I had it.

I prefer texting. I will sometimes use the fb messenger if I'm on the computer, but that is probably less than once a month.

    I hate facebook messenger.

It seems like I hate everything that's come out since my oldest kid was born. Maybe I just fell off the tech train and turned into a fuddy duddy!

I use the IM function when I'm on my mac on the actual website, but not at all on my droid. It's so much easier to text on my phone instead of using messenger.

To any carriers about a 1000 texts costs about cents or less. Not that it matters in the conversation but just saying

i use it for friends that don't have iphones. Texting is already free for iphone/ipad users thx to iMessage

i wish they would lower texting prices. At&t only has one plan now, $20 a month for unlimited, so it's either pay per text or pay $20 a month

I had it on my phone, used it twice and removed it. I prefer face to face. If I can't achieve that than a text, email or call is in store for someone :)

The only situation I ever use it, is when I'm doing homework on the computer and want to talk to my boyfriend at the same time; otherwise I'd use my phone to talk to him when I'm away at college.

I didn't know about it until today when it popped up on my mobile facebook. I didn't download it though, so I haven't tried it. I hate my smart phone because of the touchscreen texting so I'm going to get another smartphone with a keyboard so then I may try it but maybe not. I don't know if my friends are using it either as no one has said much.

I use the mobile app all the time, especially to talk to two people at once. Just easier IMO.

Unless you pay per text, it's not going to do that.

If you had an iPhone, you could already do that, b/c iPhone to iPhone is iMessage, which is free.
