Caltrate. I like the 600U with Vitamin D (the latter helps calcium absorbs better). But it also depends on your age! I am 43 and has a small frame, so dr recommend a calcium supplment many years ago.

From what I know, cheaper ones - like store brands - work the same. Some disagree because of brand name quality control...I don't know, pick whatever you think works for you :)

The most important time to take a calcium dose is before bedtime. During sleep, your bones are at rest and this is when they "repair". Do not combine with other minerals like magnesium, they will interact (upset stomach). Bone mineral density declines after age 25, so it's wise to build up BMD if you are young. Weight bearing exercises (even walking) help too.

1500mg (Elemental calcium) total daily is typical, the body can only absorb 500-600 mg at a time so it's usually dosed 3 times daily...especially take it before bed.

Adora Calcium Supplements are tasty! Their tag line is "crave your calcium." They are chocolate calcium disks made with premium all-natural chocolate. Not at all chalky like viactiv or similar calcium chews (which I was taking before the nutritionist at the gym let me taste test these). It is just like eating a mini chocolate bar. I eat one disk after lunch and one after dinner - deals with my post meal sweet craving AND provides the necessary calcium. 500 mg of calcium in each disk plus vitamin D3 and magnesium (I note the last poster said not to combine calcium with magnesium. The package says they do this to allow "optimal absorption". I have never had tummy issues with them.)

They are available at Whole Foods and sometimes I find them on sale at CVS but when that happens they go pretty quickly. They can also be ordered online which I have done in the past to get a better price. They come in dark and milk chocolate.

I take viactive chews. I love them and so do my girls. I track my calcium intake in my food diary and only take them when I need to.
