I've been weight training for the past year or so, am just beginning to go heavy.

Wondering if squats and deadlifts are okay or not? Heard so much about them being bad for your back!

Anyone got any facts to back it up?

I have a slight scoliosis. I was told by my trainer that I needed to have a strong core before heavy lifting. We do lots and lots of core stregthening where I work out. If your back and stomach are strong then they should be able to support you when you life in a squat or deadlift. Work on that first. I do not want to heavy lift so I didn't really pay much attention to that part but any trainer at the gym should be able to help you with this question.

My wife has scoliosis, her lower spine was pinned in the 80's, she's 40 now. Her twist was lower spine only and it was operated on before it became too severe. She lifts light and concentrates on Karate for building core and overall fitness. Her view is that it just isn't worth the risk lifting heavy, the implications of getting it wrong could be catastrophic - another year in hospital or possibly permanent disability.

But if you are determined to increase I suppose my advice would be to take it slow and easy, gradually increasing weight, leaving some time between sessions to assess for reactions such as swelling, loss of mobility, pain. Technique will be critical and it may be appropriate that you speak to someone first, definitely your physician/orthopod/GP and/or a good sports physio. Can you get an effective lumbar support too, anything that alleviates the stress on the spine.

Good luck though and be safe!
