TOM-Ladies question

I know there have been a LOT of posts regarding this subject, but up until recently I never had a reason to pay much attention.

I stopped taking my birth control a few months ago and last month got my first period in five years. Yesterday I snacked on everything in site, and felt the same today but didn't realize why until I got some cramps today. So being that this is only my second period in all these years, I feel a little lost.

I don't recall getting food cravings (seems to be salt mostly) before, but then again that was back when I ate whatever I wanted all the time, so I wouldn't have noticed.

So what do you ladies do during TOM? Do you give into your cravings and get back on the sadle afterward, somehow stay strong and ignore them or exercise more in order to make room for them? The bad thing about exercise this week is that it suddenly turned cold and I haven't gotten down my plan for cold weather work outs yet. But it shouldn't be a problem once I figure it out.

The weird thing is, I am not hungry at all, but I just cannot seem to satisfy my snack craving.

Pick the healthliest snack foods you can manage. Do the best you can.

i do get food cravings during that TOM. Usually its salty or sweet foods, depending on other factors around that time. I notice if I eat more carbs I crave sweets instead of salty.

Craving the salty stuff could be a sign that you need to drink more water. If you arent already drinking 8 glasses a day, try doing it and see if that helps. If you are drinking that much, try drinking a little more than normal and see if that effects your cravings.

Sometimes i just get the "need to crunch" craving.. not necessarily for sweet or salty. Ice chips or healthy veggies work great.

Try to avoid giving into the cravings... you can do it!! Dont let that time of the month become a reason to overinduldge in things that would normally be off limits.

If you find you just HAVE to have something, find something low-fat that will work. Search the recipe boards here or go to Hungry-girl.com and find a good fix.

That's when I hit the gym or go for a walk....while chewing gum.

The gum keeps me occupied and hits the sweet craving, and working out is a very good appetite suppressant.

I'm in the exact same boat as you! I just got my first one without BC and I was blown away lol. I don't necessarily overindulge, but I get irritated and I don't want to go to the gym. Just need to force myself to not be stupid about stuff like that

Well I'm proud of myself, despite a little more snacking, I hooked up my bike to the trainer (solved my cold weather problem) and burned another 200 calories just now. Probably not enough, but it's better than if I just did nothing and went to bed.

    Thanks for the input!

If gum works for YOU great!! But be forewarned. For some, like me, all gum does is make me hungrier because it stimulates digestive juices and that can trigger an appetite even stronger than when you started. I actually chew gum if I have OVER eaten, because it works better than any antacid or whatever, to reduced the feelings of "too full".

Like I said, if it works for you, great. Working out, with or without gum is always a great distracting idea!!:flowerforyou:

That's what I do. Studies have shown that when someone is hungry and they go work out, then they are not hungry or less hungry when they are done. So even though you're not really hungry, maybe the craving will go away too. Just try walking the craving off

I was off BC for awhile and actually didn't get bad cravings. I went back on the shot and every month I would have period like symptoms including uncontrollable cravings.
If you love chocolate like me, I stick with Jello Sugar Free Puddings. They are fantastic and help.
