Frustrated

I am frustrated. I am tired. I want it to be easier. I need to fight these demons - my food demons. In truth, it's not about calories, protein, carbs, sodium or anything else. It's about the fact that - yes, I will have to think about food every day for the rest of my life. I will always have a weight problem. The difference will be if I'm in maintaining or still trying to lose. Wish me strength because I do not need luck.

You're correct, you need to think about food every day. It's kind of tough when you think about it: An alcoholic does not need to consume alcohol, a drug addict does not need to use drugs but all people need to eat, even if it's something that's been challenging for you in the past. Making smart choices and keeping your long term goals are what's important. The weight did not go on in 3 days and it's not going to come off in three days. That being said, even a modest weight loss will put you that much closer to your goals. I began my journey with no idea that I'd be where I am now. Celebrate your small successes as they come and take your time.0

Thanks, Dan. I really needed the boost. I'm trying to look down the road for balance and not get tripped up by the potholes on the way.0

Well said and you're not alone. I too battle the food demons EVERYDAY! There isn't one day or a moment of the day I do not think of food. Some people drink, some, do drugs..I like food. I like the comfort food brings me. With that said, Over the last year I've had to rethink my relationship with food It is NOT easy by any stretch of the means. However, it has gotten easier. On really bad days I used to get a turtle sundae now I go for a run or go to the club and workout. Food is still an addiction for me except my new addiction is coming up with healthier good tasting recipes. I vow to eat healthy/good food 6 days a week. Once a week I can eat what I want without feeling guilty. Funny thing is I find myself wanting healthier things. My wife and I now split a turtle sundae instead of me eating a whole one. My wife also loves chocolate so she always has it in the house..we share a candy bar.
It's a process. Begin making small changes and the rest will follow. It will become easier. Friend me if you'd like.. I know all too well the food demons. I never knew others were like me until I found this site. Good luck

To battle demons, you have to have armor. Build your internal armor. Read books about Overeating, Food Obsession, Geneen Roth, Overeaters Anonymous, and any other books that will allow you to work internally. I have started this process and can now walk into our favorite bakery, order from the healthy menu and not even look at the french desserts. Fall in love with yourself again...the you that you want to be and the weight will begin to melt because you will want to take care of yourself, you will want to eat the right food, you will want to exercise so you can be stronger...instead of the want for food, replace it with the want to be loved inside. Try to meditate when you think of food or do something you really enjoy. Dance, sing, jump, go for a walk...what every you enjoy that doesn't revolve around food. I know....sounds kinda "psychotherapy" but it works. I have been an overeating addict for years and am finally coming to peace with my eating demon. It fights me some days, but I just push it away because I have no room inside of me anymore.
Good luck!

Funny you should mention roads -
I wanted to share something that has helped me, not only with dieting, but in life in general...
In the book, "You! On a Diet" it says, (and I paraphrase) if you slip up (say eat 1/2 a cake or go for an extra slice of pizza) simply make a "U-Turn." It likens it to the GPS system in your car... if you miss a turn, it doesn't say... well, you've screwed up now, you might as well go all the way in the wrong direction. No. Instead it says, at your next possible opportunity, make a U-Turn.
Using this logic, there is no longer such a thing as a "gateway" food or an excuse to give up. Because if you screw up, just make a U-Turn and get back on the right course.
it's an oooooold thread. But still good.
