Vitamins / Supplements advice

Wondering what kind of advice you can offer for supplements. I am 45 yrs old and started pre-menopause, need to loose 60 pounds to be at an ideal weight. There is so much information out there about vitamins and other supplements, it gets confusing!

A multivitamin and fish oil (or flax oil, or flax seed) should get you a great start. Anything else would be dependent on any specific problems you're trying to address.

Watch out for multivitamins because they tend to be a waste of money because food is so enhanced with vitamins and minerals and you look a lot of food labels you are getting a lot of you DRV and you will just pee the excess out. So best thing to do is go to the doctor if possible, and have blood work done to see if you are deficient in anything. Supplements are expensive and no point spending money on them if you are just peeing them out.

Agreeing with this. The only other things I'd add are Vitamin D and a probiotic.

Inasmuch as packaged foods are loaded with all kinds of things, taking a multivitamin ensures you're not missing any. Even fresh, organic foods suffer some level of nutrient deficiency due to soil depletion. And our bodies can take in whatever, but really, there are factors such as stress, disrupted/not enough sleep and environmental toxins that deplete us of what we take in quicker than it should.

And for fish oil and Vitamin D, try to get liquid. The research on pill form is that it's not absorbing well. Most people in this country have impaired digestion--and that could be a factor. Nordic Naturals fish oil is pharma grade filtered and derived from small fish (so less chance of mercury in the first place). If you are eating primarily whole, fresh foods (foods without a label) and pasture-raised meat, you could take an Omega 3-6-9 combo; but there is SO MUCH Omega-6 in most people's diet in this country that you would likely be better off with a straight Omega-3. Carlson makes a Vitamin D drop that is tasteless (completely) and is 2,000 IUs/drop (so a tiny bottle lasts quite a while depending on your dosing).

As for probiotics, make sure you buy one that's refrigerated. They're live organisms. You can find them in any supplement or natural foods store's fridge section.

Bottom line: Everyone's needs are different. That's why I like muscle testing. That way, the body tells you EXACTLY what it needs!
