Here's the headline "Sugar can make you dumb, US scientists warn"

http://ca.news.yahoo.com/sugar-dumb-us-scientists-warn-190918006.html

Here's the study ;

"Metabolic syndrome" in the brain: Deficiency in omega-3-fatty acid exacerbates dysfunctions in insulin receptor signaling and cognition. J Physiol. 2012 May 15;590(Pt 10):2485-99

As well as other daily interactions. Here, I've been blaming pregnancy and mother hood for the past 3 years, but it's really been those damn twizzlers and all that chocolate the whole time.

Good thing I try to keep a 1-1 fish oil to jelly bean ratio, otherwise I'd be a fool

No. But, I am sure those that are "anti" sugar will take this and run with it.

The was a test that was done on lab rats, they even stated they don't know what the human correlation or amount would be. Besides the fact that the rats were given the sugar solution as drinking water, it is a very controlled very specific study, I am sure that if you had a human only ingest sugar for 6 weeks, that you could find the same correlation.

But- people will and can find studies to back up their wildly stupid claims about what is "bad" for us.

Me- I will continue to eat what I want, in moderation.

Couldn't access the whole original paper but it looks like the lack of omega-3 in addition to the high fructose is the main problem. We've seen research like this before with regard to dementia and Alzheimer's or "type-3 diabetes". I am glad to see more and more research coming out about Metabolic Syndrome/Dysfunction. Very interesting stuff.

Freak out? No, I'm not going to "freak out" about anything related to diet.

Consider that sugar intake does more harm than good long term and eat accordingly? Yes, especially in a typical US diet lacking in omega-3 in relation to high omega-6.

I'll stick to my no to little added sugar and omega-3 supplementation. It's not hurting anything, and regardless of long term benefits: I feel better for it now.

no...we shouldn't. but, this thread will quickly fill up with people bragging about how they eat all the sugar they want, still lose weight and how staying in a caloric deficit is ALL that matters.

It seems quite a few people anticipated this study since they've been freaking out about sugar for years already.

On that note, my breakfast was a mini Milky Way and a Mini 3 Musketeers. Yum.

    Lol
The important thing to remember is that not all fructose is created equal. “We’re not talking about naturally occurring fructose in fruits, which also contain important antioxidants,” explained Gomez-Pinilla. “We’re more concerned about the fructose in high-fructose corn syrup, which is added to manufactured food products as a sweetener and preservative.”

Note that the study could indicate that a lack of omega 3 fatty acids makes you dumb as well, not an excess of sure - or more correctly a good ratio of one to the other. If I were a scientist I would shoot some of the headline grabbers who report my work and exaggerate or misinterpret the results.

    Sugar Solution Kills Rats!
Rats were fed a solution of sugar and rat poison and died, compared to the control group which were fed water and rat food.

Wait, got it under control now. My problem with products that contain HFCS is that it seems to tear up my stomach - I don't know if it is that, or other stuff that happens to be in those products as well.

See, this is just one of the reasons we get along . . . we're dumbing it up together. My brain just said "I want that, I want that, I want that, I want that, I want that, I want that, I want that, I want that, I want that, let's go get dumb."

There's not much difference between HFCS beverages and sugar water. Ignore it if you want, but the evidence is suggesting that fructose consumption plays a part in accelerating several health problems.

Moderate alcohol consumption is good for you. A lot of controlled studies with weed have found the same thing.

I'm not sure you can consume enough weed for it to be considered excess, but like alcohol, fructose can be consumed to excess where it causes problems.

That sounded more like a lack of Omega 3's than too much sugar to me... But that's not a trendy headline...

Diabetes is still a bad thing.

If you have diabetes it means that you either don't produce insulin or the insulin you do produce isn't effective in lowering your blood sugar.
