Meetup websites... creepy or not?

I'm looking to move in the next few months - where is dependent on who wants to hire me - and I'm trying to brainstorm ways to meet people in places that I don't necessarily know anyone. I know there's always the option to just go out to, like, a sports bar and seeing what happens, but I'm also looking at more structured things.

So, websites like meetup.com I'm intrigued by because there are tons of different groups and events and interests, and I feel like I could potentially meet new friends and have fun. But, I've never done anything like this so I'm just curious if anyone has any experience with these meetup groups.

I just don't want to be "that girl" that ends up on the news. Any experience? Advice? Suggestions? Hit me with 'em.

My friend moved to Baltimore and has joined a bunch of the meetup groups (book club, broomball, floor hockey) and she's met really fun and nice people! Hope that's helpful :)

I joined one a while back. It was for ghost hunting. I only went to a few hunts before meetup.com started charging fees and the group kind of disengaged. Go for it, but use your better judgement - always make sure the meeting is in a public place.

    Kind of miss it.....
