Being slim...not the norm?!

Last saturday night a friend and I were having a moan about our love handles over our (uk) size 10 skinny jeans whilst getting ready to go out. When we were at the club later, I noticed my friend wasn't being her usual self and barely dancing, mainly standing next to a wall. I asked her if she didn't like the music, she said she did but just felt a bit self conscious.

Anyway, I spoke to her about it the next day as wanted to know why she felt like that. She told me that as most of the women in there were quite large that we really stood out and it made her feel self conscious, I agreed that the majority were larger but didn't understand how it would make her feel that way....still don't actually. Has anyone else felt like this?

It seems being slim is not the norm, how weird and worrying.

Well, with everyone getting fatter, it's understandable that being thin isn't "the norm" anymore. No reason to be self conscious about it though!

if you have muffin tops over your jeans then they don't fit...maybe that is the reason she was self conscious.

I don't know why she'd feel more conscious being smaller than the others, that usually gives more confidence. And that contradicts your discussion about your 'love handles'.

It isn't even about being "normal"...it's about being HEALTHY!! I am slim and trim and will NEVER give it up! But I'm healthy too, a vegetarian, a runner, active lifestyle, etc.

No, I don't think it's the "norm", either. Now that I've started watching my health, sometimes I just look around me as I'm going through my day and sort of mentally note the number of people that are NOT overweight vs. those that are.

At least in my part of the US, the overweight crowd wins by far.

But, I don't see any reason to feel self-conscious or uncomfortable, especially if your motive for being at a healthy weight is to be healthy! Sometimes, I get tired of feeling like others see me as obsessed because I limit my portions or turn food down that I don't think is worth the calories or make a conscious effort to get sweaty just about everyday, but then I remember how miserable I was before and I don't ever want to go down that road again.

Why be normal when you be extraordinary. Be healthier and more confidant than the norm.

I love this! Now that I've lost weight and put a lot of effort into being somewhat fit, I always notice when I'm the smallest in the room, or even just when I'm not the biggest. I love that feeling, I never feel like I particularly stand out because I'm not overly thin, but I do feel like I don't stand out in a negative way either and that's great!

Hmm. That's a strange one. My inner detective tells me that maybe there was something else going on with your friend that she chose not to disclose, but hey, who am I?

I said we are slim, not perfectly toned and defined. You can be slim and still have imperfections.
