So i did my longest run so far (8.5 miles) yesterday and today i have one toenail on each foot that hurts. Any suggestions to relieve the pain and prevent it from happening on future runs?

Your shoes are probably too small. You should buy shoes that are at least 1/2 size bigger and more like a full size bigger than you normally wear. That gives your foot and toes room to move without constantly bumping into the shoe while you run. Runners also get black toe nails from running too that often fall off. This is common, but no fun. Hopefully your hurt toenails won't turn into that. Good luck

I second that. I've been running for years and never had toenail issues, blisters yes but toenails no. My running shoes are 1/2 size larger than my dress shoes. Although I have also learned to not let the ladies doing my pedicures cut the cuticles. For some reason when they do that on my big toe it really hurts. If you can fit it into the budget try going for a pedicure at least once every two months. I try going after my Sat. long runs. It feels soooo good. Especially when they massage your legs. Good luck with the running.

Make sure that your toe nails are trimmed, and some good socks. Other than that, you are running long distances...be prepared for some black toe nails!

It could also be your toes/shape of your feet. I've been running for 2 years, completed 2 half marathons, two 10 miler races, and several 10ks. When I run over 6 miles I have found that any one of the following things can happen: (1) blood blisters underneath my toe nails or (2) my toe nails fall off. It is common for runners to have problems with their toe nails (especially if you have ANY sort of hammer toe and any one of your toes curls under even slightly). Generally, I manage this by keeping my toe nails incredibly short...I would rather run 10 miles than have sexy toes in sandals...
