I know this is off topic. But after eating carrots, I got a toothache and now a gumball sized swelling along the gumline. Does anyone know what causes this and remedies for it until my dental appt in a couple days? Thanks

I hate that you feel bad, I you you feel better soon toothaches suck. Sometimes the cause could be if you have a hole in the tooth that is hurting and bacteria can get into the hole and cause an infection. If it gets worse I would go to an urgent care place or the ER. Some people use a goody powder and put the powder directly onto the tooth that hurts and the gumline area that is swolen. Lortabs work to but of course they are prescription. I hope this helps! feel better soon!0

It could be caused by any number of things :ohwell: Glad to hear that you've got a dental appointment soon. I suggest ibuprofen to help with the swelling and gargling with warm salt water. It should help relieve the pain and keep the bacteria at bay if it's being caused by an infection. Hope you feel better soon!0

Clove Oil is great to relieve pain until you get to the dentist. You can buy it in the essential oils section at Whole Foods or similar market.
Wet a Q-tip, apply 1 drop of clove oil, and then press the Q-tip at the gumline of the affected tooth. Do not drink clove oil or allow it to get in your eyes. It will also burn if it gets into a cut -- but you'll live0 -
Something else you can try...a mouthfull of distilled alcohol (booze) of your choice....vodka, gin, whiskey etc. NOT RUBBING ALCOHOL! Swish it around in your mouth and hold it in the swollen area as long as you can tollerate it. You can either spit it out or swallow it. It numbs the area as well as taking care of any bacteria it can reach. If your abscess bursts or pops do not swallow the goop if you can avoid it. Rinse and spit with salt water, mouthwash or booze. Get to the dentist/ER asap if that happens. Don't mess with it, let the dentist take care of it.

Or swish soluble aspirin around in your mouth, that will take the pain away.0

Aloe is an astringent that brings what causes swelling to the surface and draws it out. We use a leaf with the outer skin removed and place it near the swelling. Of course this is only a temporary help. You still need an antibiotic.0

This sounds like an acute dental abscess to me. Mostly, make sure you get yourself to the dentist as soon as you can because the only thing which will sort this out is proper treatment.
Essentially, if I'm right, the pulp in your tooth is infected by bacteria, and these need to be removed by doing a root canal procedure, or extracting the tooth. And perhaps by taking antibiotics as well.
Do not under any circumstances crush up painkillers and put them on your gum, because this will just irritate the gum. Badly.
I've had three of these in the last year and the only thing which helped the pain was to keep upright. Lying down just increased the feeling of pressure and pain.
If the 'gumboil' pops then the feeling of pressure and pain might lessen, but you do still need to go to the dentist for treatment. These infections can never clear up on their own and if you leave them you can develop antibiotic-resistant bacteria (this is what my endodontist told me).
Just want to add that for my abscesses, painkillers and home remedies soon became ineffective. I'm not trying to be gloomy here, juts impressing upon you that it's a potentially serious issue you can't really treat yourself.0
