gaining muscle after 40????

On another post I saw someone make the statement that "you cannot gain muscle after 40". I did not want to hijack that thread so I'm going to post another........
This statement bothered me because for a split second it deflated me since I am 47. I am not going for the 15% ripped look, but I would like to be between 20-24% and I need to build muscle to look good in this.......
This seemed like an urban myth to me, I have seen people become fitness models in their 40's, here on this site as a matter of fact. I believe it IS harder, but I dont believe you CANT do it.
Just looking for some input on this, from what I read on the subject online, this isnt true, just harder after 40 when your hormones start to change.

 Well that was my initial knee jerk reaction, I really couldnt find anything to support that position, I did only a cursory look around, but of course I dont WANT to accept that position because I'm over 40, LOL0 -
I'm 42 and I assure you I am gaining muscle. Visibly.0
-
Of course you can, age has nothing to do with muscle gain.0
-
If you work out and Lift weights or use the machines..You can build muscle..told to me by a Physical Therapist!!!0

i'm 46 and gaining muscle % every week0
-
Piss on that theory.
I will be 41 in a couple of months and I am gaining muscle. Not sure why you would not be able to do this. I am in better shape now than I was in my 20's.0 -
I am 42 and gaining muscle. I am in the best shape of my life. I could beat up my 20 year old self.0

I'm 53 and look better than when I did "pre-40's" and in addition...in better health!0

As part of a Wellness Program, next month the company I work for is bringing in two different personal trainers a couple of weeks apart -- one man and one woman. Both are RIPPED and in the best shape of their lives. He is in his late 50s, she is in her late 40s.
Considering they could kick some serious backside, I wouldn't want to suggest to either of them that they can't gain muscle because of their age.0 -
I don't know who made that statement, but they don't know jack!
I'm 42 and putting on muscle every week.0 -
I'll make this short and sweet.
NOT TRUE.
Signed me - age 48 closing in on 49 and I've got muscles that I didn't start working on until AFTER I turned 48. No pain no gain. Gotta work it. Age is not an EXCUSE - but is one that some folks like to use.0 -
Yeah I don't think age has too much to due with it. I am definitely getting stronger and some muscles reappeared from a 10 to 15 year hiatus. .....LOL0

It does get harder as you age, especially for women after menopause, but it is absolutely possible.0

I'm 45 and hadn't trained for over 15 years. Joined the gym 9 weeks ago and my all my lifts have gone up by between 40 and 100% in that time. Been on a diet for that long too and lost inches from my waist and gained them on my arms but haven't lost any 'weight' for the past 6 weeks.
If I haven't gained muscle I must have been bitten by a radioative spider.0 -

Everyone knows you cannot gain brain cells after 40, but muscle can be gained as you want.0
