Greatest Movie of All Time, Drama/Thriller Region
(Intro from the initial thread:)
OK. Here's the deal. Being a little bored, being a movie nerd and having a little extra time, I've built a few brackets. The idea is to, eventually, crown the Greatest Movie of All Time. (Hence the thread title.)
First, these are the movies I happened to choose. Some good ones got left out. Some that you think are good aren't thought good by the masses or, more importantly, by me -- since, well, I made the bracket. And you may then disagree with the seedings, too. And that's fair. But just play along, if you're interested. Could be fun.
Reply on the thread with the seeds and names of your winners of each pairing. I'll let the first round go for a while, then add up the votes and post the winners/next round's pairings.
Not represented in this particular tournament are the 'smaller' genres, like war, western, documentary, etc. And, sorry international MFPers, I didn't go foreign, either. So consider this The Greatest (American) Movie of All Time Bracket Tourney, I suppose.
The four genre regions are Comedy, Action, Sci-Fi/Fantasy and Drama/Thriller. Winners of each region will be determined, starting with Comedy, and then will pair off for the Final Four. Comedy will face Drama/Thriller, Action will meet Sci-Fi/Fantasy.
And to spark more discussion, feel free to give your reasons for some of your choices!
Comedy's region has a winner; the genre will be represented in the Final Four by Monty Python: Holy Grail. Action, too, has given us a representative in Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Arc. Sci-Fi/Fantasy's champion is Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back. And now, Drama/Thriller.

I'd put It's a Wonderful LIfe and The Hunt for Red October well before some of these. You also forgot Cape Fear. That movie was incredible.0 -
I'll make it easy for you. Gone With The Wind, FTW.0
-
Sunset Boulevard -- Classic
Silence of the Lambs -- freaking scary, better than the book
North by Northwest - Hitchcock, nuff said
Rear Window - It is the better of the two
5 Casablanca -- no contest and I loved Memento
Jaws - hard choice, but better lines in Jaws
The Exorcist - I just don't like Rocky
Schindler's List - moving and Finnes rocked his role
Citizen Kane - I hate you so much for this choice.
To Kill a Mocking Bird - because scout is great
Fight Club - because of the 1st rule (and Meatloaf)
Chinatown - Forget it Jake, Its Chinatown, jack
Goodfellas
Psycho
Shawshank Redemption -- again better then the book
Se7en -- just plain twisted.0 -

This should have been 2 categories, one for Thriller and one for Drama, it was so hard to compare some of them because one was a drama and the other a thriller. There were also a lot on this list that I had not seen which actually surprised me.0 -

I must agree with the above comment, especially It's a Wonderful Life, I watch it every year and not just at Christmas.0 -

wow. no love for se7en, huh? tough crowd!
(they are both great movies, fwiw. but suspects tends to be more of a cult following. I mean, if you look at just the worldwide gross -- I know, just one indicator, but they came out in the same year so no adjustment of money needed -- suspects made a little under 30 million or so. se7en made more than 316 million.)0 -
