Very few lbs to lose....what's your net?

I'm a 26 year old female who's 5'9 and weighs 148 with 23% body fat. I recently went to a nutritionist who tested my BMR and it turned out to be 1330 :( I have a desk job, so she estimated that on a typical day (without exercise) I probably burn 1800.

So to lose 1 lbs/week I would need to net 1300, which seems low based on other MFP'ers here.

While I'm in the healthy weight range, I'd like to get back down to 135 (steady weight for my whole life til I started a desk job).

Does anyone else have to net REALLY low calories to get to their goal weight? I eat about 1700/day and then exercsie 400 to net 1300, but it still seems like a low net number.

Anyone else out there with this same issue?

I've had to stay in the neighborhood of 1150 to see some steady change. I go over some days and under some others. I'm short, small-framed, older and recovering from an injury so am super-sedentary.

I try to net between 1100 and 1300 a day even though I should be closer to 1500 according to MFP. I feel good, I'm not starving and while the scale isn't moving exactly fast, it is going down, very slowly. I exercise almost every day, usually one day off a week. On the days I'm off I probably am closer to my 1500 calories because there is no net/no exercise. Does that make sense?

A pound per week might be too aggressive so close to your goal weight. I'd back down to a half pound per week and see how that goes. In fact, that's what I did when I was about 12 pounds above goal, and I didn't see much of a difference in the rate of loss. My body fat percentage had already dropped low enough that I'd crossed the point of diminishing returns on the higher deficit.

Agree with previous poster. Set yourself to lose 1/2 pound a week and just log everything! Depending on how you log your exercise (HRM, just estimates) you might want to start by eating half those calories back (or just putting in 1/2 the calories you 'burn') and see where that gets you.

my net is 1200. It seems low compared to my pals as well. But it is working. I started in January and have lost 21 lbs so far. I guess I would consult a doc and ask them what their opinion is.

Yes, me. I'm almost 5'6 and weigh about 130-133 pounds. I usually net under 1300 calories per day and it's just really hard to get any weight off past this point because it's been my body's set weight for a few years now. I am just not in an "eat more to lose more" place. My body fights me for every ounce.

I agree the net numbers are ridiculously low. I am mainly using this program to track what I eat, not necessarily as a weight loss tool. It shows that I should take in 1300 calories per day which is ridiculously low. I am not sure I would rely on this program to gauge what you should be eating. Setting it to half pound will improve the amount. I would do some research-eating too little can be counter productive when you are trying to lose weight especially if you have an exercise routine.

"Your basal metabolic rate, or BMR, is the minimum calorific requirement needed to sustain life in a resting individual. It can be looked at as being the amount of energy (measured in calories) expended by the body to remain in bed all day!" So if you're netting 1300 calories you're not giving yourself enough fuel. You're not going to die, but I bet you'll be tired and crabby.

I think you'd be better off taking 15% off of your TDEE (1800 - 15% = 1530) and allowing yourself a little more fuel for those workouts.

Check out my blog (I'm new to this too; I was on 1200/day). In the archives my first post has great links and explains how I calculated my calories. Good luck! :flowerforyou:

Well I also add 15% to my food estimate and subtract 20% of my exercise estimates just in case. I know one time MFP tried to say I burned 560 calories on an hour walk and there was NO way that was right :(

    Thanks!

The way to get to a higher metabolism is to eat more and have more lean body mass.

When I was 105 pounds I was skinny fat and got to a point where I ate 1000 a day, any more I would gain.

After reducing my body fat and gaining weight I am now 110-112 and eat 1800 to maintain. Not to mention I am older.

If I were you I would gradually increase your calories weekly, step up your workouts, and get out of the sloth zone.

    :flowerforyou: You'll be much happier.

I'm at goal weight but will still steadily work on losing another 10-15 lbs for pure entertainment. I'm 5'9'' and 146 so it's slow moving. I DO NOT and CAN NOT eat 1300 calories a day. Yikes! I will never eat below 1600 and have found 1800 to be the good number to where I eat what I want but never over eat. I've lost very slowly the last few months but I haven't gained either!

I believe that with so few lbs to lose that you shouldn't have to rush it. I really think it should be slow and steady... half lb a week would be an INSANE rate for me. Plus the slower you are the more sustainable it is.

    My two cents!
