how late do you eat?

How late do u eat? One of the drs I work for says if u eat after 7pm u might as well just tape the food across your stomach! But at the same time my endocrinologist says I must eat a bedtime snack... One of my biggest problems is I dont eat enough during the day, and then I'm trying to catch up at night...bad?

Meal timing does not matter. Your doctor doesn't know what he's talking about. Food doesn't magically convert to fat after 7PM.

Metabolism is lowest when you're asleep, but you still digest food normally. I usually go to bed around 1 am and I'll eat a meal about 10:30 pm then maybe a 100 calorie snack right before bed. I still lose weight. It all comes down to energy in vs. energy out in the end, regardless of eating time :) Yes eating right before bed isn't the best idea since it can affect how you sleep, but I say, hey, eat however late you want, just make sure to log it :D
  • Ya...hes a rheumatologist...so i dont really listen to him on that kind of stuff! He also says u can change from being type 2 to type 1 diabetic! Uh no...lol I tend to do alot of snacking in the evening when im trying to catch up on my cals...

Don't fret over the clock. Pay attention to what you are eating instead. Have healthier, lighter foods in the evening, and keep heavy meals to earlier in the day so you can burn them off. Avoid mindless munching. Use the evening food items to fill the deficit in your meals from the day. Low on fiber? Calcium? Fulfill your day with the right foods at night, and don't eat it if you aren't hungry!
  • Personally I try to eat an hour before going to bed, so this means anywhere from 9 to 10 depending on when I plan to go to bed. This is because I don't like going to bed on a full stomach, not because I fear my food is going to turn into fat. I treat myself to strawberries and frozen yogurt every night. I love my sweets, and knowing that I have frozen yogurt to look forward to helps me to say no to other temptations throughout the day. If the food fits into your goals and makes you happy, go for it.
  • I have almonds every night. I was doing really low carb and eating like 3 atkins bars a day which i dont think was good because i wasnt counting total carbs...only net carbs. So i used to also eat atkins version of a snickers bar...but i dont do that very often. On low carb i wasnt eating any fruit but now im trying to have a serving of fruit at night as well.

Listen to your body, and if you are hungry eat a small snack
Personally I try not to eat after 9 or so just to be sure I am hungry for breakfast in the morning. I say a calorie is a calorie no matter what time of day you eat it so just do what feels right for you :)

Personally, I MUST eat right before I go to bed. I can't eat unless I'm fully satisfied, otherwise I will stay up and salivate in bed forever until I get up and fix something to eat. I don't eat a full "MEAL" before I go to bed, but I'll eat something filling enough. Usually a protein shake (banana cream pie, WOO!), peanut butter toast, or sweet bread and milk. Probably no more than maybe 300 calories, right before I go to bed. :) It's been working well for me!

This. If this was the case, I'd be screwed for being on night shift.

If it gives you indigestion or affects sleep to eat before bed, then figure out what works for you. Don't think about it as a daily thing and your metabolism going home for the day at a certain time.
