I do good for a few days, and then slide, or a month and then revert. Are there any specific little things you do that work to keep you trying? thanks.

Everytime I lose focus I bring out my skinny pictures. I have a few pictures of myself when I was skinnier and I look at them to remind me what i'm working for.
It really gives me the strength to say no.
Good Luck! :flowerforyou:0 -
bump - I'm going to come back later and read the responses because I need help with this too!0

for me it is a constant battle. I wish I had the secret to it, but alas. no.
my motivation goes up and down throughout the month, so when it is down I try to push myself through it, and when it is up , I try to take advantage of it.
But my montra is, Keep pushing forward, going back is not an option.
good luck

When I get weak and lose focus, I think about my 35 year old cousin who has Diabetes related to poor eating habits. Of course I have known my cousin for all of my life and after she's been diagnosed with Diabetes she is a totally different person. When we go out we have to contiously stop for breaks, she has lost all of her teeth now replaced with dentures. She is in constant pain and always not feeling well. I try to remember how thankful I am to not have any health conditions and that Diabetes is a reality for me if I don't eat the right things. We must remember to not eliminate the things that we like but modify by choosing smaller portions. I have tried many things and what I know is, NO diet that eliminates food works for me, But portion control is the key. Good Luck, the struggle is real for all of us.0

I've tried writing myself a letter, or making a lot of points out on paper about why I want to lose the weight. Sometimes it's easy to lose sight of your goal, but if it's down on paper and you can re-read it when losing motivation, it will help you get refocused and pull you on through.0

Get a fat photo out and on your fridge. I keeps me focused because i dont want to be that way anymore. If i feel myself slipping i just look at the photo0

I set small attainible goals that I can accomplished within a few weeks.
My first goal was to get below 300 lbs. Got there. Now it's to get down to 286 so I can say I'm halfway home AND I can say I've lost 50lbs in a calender year.
Excersise wise I'm doing C25K, and would like to run at least one 5K before Christmas. I also would like to bench press 200 lbs. I will probably get that one tomorrow morning.
Just set something small to start, and it will build momentum. My first goal in this whole process was to have one 32oz Mt Dew a week. As opposed to a, 44oz Mt Dew daily.:noway: That alone cut 4000 calories a week out of my previous diet.
Now I've got to the point where I can stare some serious temptation in the face, and say no, becuase I'm focused on my goals. Like free brawtwurst for lunch here at the office.0 -
One thing that i constantly tell myself is that no one ever feels guilty after working out. It gets me out the door every time.0

I look at the reports that MFP has available and create ones for the last 30, 90 or 180 days (especially the weight one) and just study it. I don't want the weight one going back up at all. Then I look at the individual days that look bad and go find the detail for those days to see what happened that might have hurt me in my quest for my goal of 34 at 35. I then make a note of those things I ate and ask myself if it was really worth it.
Then I look at my topics and review the nice things and encouragement that other MFPers and others have said and compare those to the pleasure I got from the bad things I ate. That's usually enough to keep me focused on my goal. If not, I just go find my wife and see if she'd like to you-know-what. That, for sure, will keep me focused on looking good, if not for me, then for her.0 -
Seeing results is my motivation! All summer I was dying to break the 210 mark, but I was at a standstill. I was determined to break it...what was the other option? Give up and gain back everything I'd lost? No way. I stuck with it, started running, and now the pounds are coming off. When I returned home fom vacation on Aug 9, was I 222...now I'm 207. THAT is how I stay focused and motivated!
Well, that and I'll be seeing a lot of friends in the coming months that I haven't seen in a year or so, which was 32 lbs ago! I want to be the skinny friend in the group! :laugh:0 -
lately i've been telling myself that if i don't keep with it this time, nothing will ever change. I've lost the same 15 lbs about 5 times this past year alone! stick with it, you can finish!0

thank you all for sharing!!0

Before I eat something I know I shouldn't, I ask myself "One week from now will I care if I ate this or not? Will I care if I lost a pound or not?" I also use "Is this worth my pants staying tight?"0

I think exercising is really helpful, this keeps me motivated and positive about losing weight. But its different for everyone, something just has to "click" in your head. I do know I was tired of not liking what i saw in the mirror and tired of not wanting to buy clothes and just wearing baggy pants and shirts.
good luck finding your focus!!0 -
Thanks so much for this post. I surly needed it. I gained 10 pounds back over the summer and I sure am not happy about the weight I have been playing with for a few years.
Great inspiration!!!!

I started a thread over a week ago requesting success stories and was particularly taken with this nucond's response. I think you'll see what I mean . . .

Mon 10/05/09 03:05 PMWelcome to the site. You have to make a lifestyle change. This is not a diet at all it truly is a lifestyle change and transformation. You eat healthy foods, drink lots of water and eat high fiber foods these two things help with keeping you feeling full longer, proteins will help with energy and stamina. Record everything in your food diary that you put in your mouth no matter what it is. Schedule time for exercise so that you will develope a good habit of doing the workouts instead of making excuses why not too. Every time a negative thought inners your mind say no and replace it with a positive thought. Example : I cannot do pushups stop instead replace that thought with I can do any thing I set my mind too. I cannot walk that mile instead say with every step I take I am getting healthier. See how you can take a negative thought and turn it into positive thought, in time you will begin to realize you can do these things and anything you want to do. Set small goals and work towards them. Then as you reach each one reward yourself with a non food item. Example: hair cut, manicure, bubble bath, day at the park, movie, article of clothing. Just keep going and if you fall off the wagon then just jump right back on and start again; but never beat yourself up over it just try to figure out what was the trigger that caused it and either address it or resolve it if you can so it does not happen again. You can do this keep going. God Bless, Brenda

I also view it as a lifestyle change. And if I need extra help, I look at pictures of my daughters, my nieces and my grandbabies and think of staying healthy to enjoy life with them. Every day I thank God for giving me choices that many in this world never get in their lives. And I remind myself often - here's to smart choices!0

I say to myself "Don't give up what you really want for what you want right now!"0
