Dr. Said.."Live Healthier or Die Sooner"

Hello, Like many other's across the world I have been told to get started eating and living healthier or die sooner. I have recently been diagnosed w/GERD & found to have a stomach hernia along w/DJD (degenative joint disease). Doc says eating better in general & getting lite daily exercise will help me loose the weight I need to get off of my bones & let the "ticker" work easier so I will feel better. The liter/smaller meals will help the GERD & not put the pressure on the hernia either. I know I really need to do this but I just haven't gotten into the mind set to "Stick With It". I have bought a tred mill, had DirecTV added to the "exercise" room & have yet to use it! I don't know why, just lazy!! I use the excuse of just sitting down for a minute when I get home from work & then I just don't go in there to exercise. I have 50 lbs I really need to loose. I have gained most of the weight over a period of time since I quit smoking 3 years ago. I need a coach/friend who will encourage me to get off of my "keaster" & stick with the program. I have been told jumping in will both feet is not always best. You get burned out. Start working on one thing until I can get my lifestyle adjusted & it becomes a "good" habit. Then, add a little change, a "good" change of course. Has anyone tried this approach? Did it work? Were you able to "stick with it"? Any suggestion to get me encouraged about all of this & to get my lifestyle to healthier choices.

hi...you definitely came to the right website! There are alot of supportive people on here! Have you tried to exercise before work? maybe just try 15-20 of walking on the treadmill? I find that if I wirkout in the morning, I can't seem to find the excuses like I can at the end of the day! I would gladly help you!0

When I first started, I first focused on figuring what I eat, what I need to eat and tracking it. Once the food became a habbit (a couple weeks) then I added in exercise at increasing intensity over time. I started with 2 days a week up to 6 days.
I found it worked best to learn how to make things with less calories and how to substitute a salad in for extra helpings of dinner. For example, instead of making scramble eggs for breakfast with whole milk and fried in butter, I cook an egg on a griddle with no fats or oils and add water instead of milk.
The important part to sticking to this is to not make yourself feel deprived and like you are on a diet. It is about changing the way you think about food. Early on, I setup goals and little prizes for those goals. (A new t-shirt at 5 lbs lost, a new watch at 15lbs....etc) Make sure your rewards are not food related. (I lost 5 lbs so lets go for milk shakes).

When you get home from work do nothing else but start on your treadmill. Have a bottle of water handy, and a towel to wipe your sweat off, and start don't even worry about what you're wearing. Doesn't matter what you speed or your incline, just get started. Every day, do a little more. As it gets easier, speed up or increase your incline. You will be surprised at how fast you will build up your strength, and then one day it won't feel like a chore, it will be just something you do automatically. I still have more weight than you to lose, but I started on the Wii Fit doing easy workouts, and every day I would add two more minutes of working out, and now I can go use the treadmill and the elliptical machine in my building for two hours straight and still have energy left over to do other things. I no longer have to worry that if my husand wants to do Disney World again, that I will have trouble walking around as much as want or fitting on a ride. It is worth all the work and more.0

Only allow yourself to watch your favorite 30 minute TV show when on the treadmill. To start out, walk at an easy pace during the show but either speed up or increase the incline during the commercials. Once you get into the habit it will become routine and you can increase speed and incline during the show. The first step is the hardest. Once you lose some of the weight, you will have more energy.0

Good tip benner, that's what I do. You're gonna watch the idiot box anyway.
I watch my local morning news - every morning, Abby and whats'er-name give me the weather and the sports and who's cheating who et cetera - and I'm on my elliptical machine working my butt off. I get up, potty, grab a drink and workout. Then I hop in the shower and go to work. It's a great way to start the day - get good and sweaty, get the ticker ticking, hose off with a cool shower - makes you feel like a million bux. :laugh:
Lotsa times I take the dogs out after exercise/before shower - still in my shorts. Outside this morning it was 38 degrees F. and the steam just poured off me sweaty bod. Whatta rush! Try it, you'll like it.0 -
Make a decision once a month to change something. Just one thing though! Don't say - No more junk food. Instead start with no chocolate bars. THen next month, instead of chips for snacks choose a healthy alternative. These are things I have done. Studies have shown that people have a higher success rate doing it this way then trying to do it all at once which almost always fails .
Remember, as you work out, there may be times you don't loose weight but you shrink in sizes. This is still a sign of huge success!:drinker:
Start slowly (this prevents injuries). Try things out. See what works for you with the time you have available. There are so many things people can do, pick stuff you like to do and you'll be that much more successful!

It does get easier. As you begin to see progress and feel better, you'll want more. Your enthusiasm will build, and you'll make choices you can't even imagine right now. This is an addiction, a very good and healthy one. Enjoy.0

Thanks, wish it was 38 degrees here..I love the cooler weather..It's hot & raining today in N. Louisiana...My back yard is soaked...I'll have my own bayou before much longer it it doesn't slow down...HA! Thanks, for the encouragment..I'm gonna try...:happy:0
