I went shopping for pants yesterday wearing a size 17 comftorably...WELL....I came home with a pair sized 18, and 2 pairs sized 20 :noway:   I didn't realize I was a bigger size...and these pants were all three from differents stores too and they were different brands...so it wasn't just that they were running a size differents. The 20's though are a little loose and the 18s are a bit tight........so pretty much i'm a 19?!?!?! After I spent about an hour feeling sorry for myself I decided to go look in the mirror and I thought to myself that just becuase my pant size was bigger than I thought didn't mean that I all of a sudden gained a bunch of weight. And I also decided that I will reach my goal weight when I look in the mirror and like what I see...it won't matter what the numbers on the scale or clothes say! That could be 135, could be 150!!!

Good for you! There are things that will happen that will make us say "whats the point" Yes we do need times to spend feeling sorry for ourselves, but doingthat won't change a thing! So keep up that positive thinking!

I have found that when it comes to women's clothing and the size written on the lable -- it means absolutly nothing!! :ohwell: I currently have on a size 10 jean -- bought this summer at BJ's. They are just a tad big. All of last week I wore size 8 Anne Taylor slacks to work -- 3 fit very nice, 2 were a tad large. I wore my favorite fall jeans (in a size 6) last weekend and I was not poured into them. I haven't changed 3 sizes in 6 days. I have sewing patterns from my mother that she bought in the 50's -- I should be a size 12 right now according to them. :noway: Where you buy clothing, the style you try one -- AND how much you pay for them all figures into that number on the lable. Usually the better the store and the more expensive the clothing -- the smaller the size. I use it only as a guide to know approxiamtely where to start looking on the rack. You have done a great job on your journey, show it off by learning what a proper fit really looks like on you. This will help you feel better about yourself and encourage you to keep going. :flowerforyou:
  • I hit the Kohl's sale Friday night & had a similar wtf moment. All my jeans are size 16-I haven't bought any new ones since starting MFP 49lbs ago. When I came to MFP I could squeeze into 3 or 4 pairs & the rest were unbearably tight--all were Levi's 550's. So I grabbed a size 12 figuring 49lbs should be at least 2 sizes. I also grabbed another pair of random brand jeans in a 14 b/c I couldn't find a 12 short. By the time I got to the dressing room I had completely forgotten what I had grabbed. First pair (random brand) fit comfortably tight & so did the Levi's. Then I realized I had one size 14 & one size 12 both of which fit the same. HMMM! Proof that fabric & cut play a huge part in sizing. I ended up buying both despite not wanting to buy one in a larger size because the size 14 was half off :) So my lesson learned is that I'll never be able to buy pants based on size w/out trying them on first :p)

JJs25th is completely right. It's called ""Vanity Sizing." Since there are no size standards in the US stores can make a size as big as they want (within reason). A size 17 of one brand is not the same size as a 17 of another brand or even another style. Stores realized that women would buy more clothes if they thought they were smaller size. As JJ mentioned the more expensive the store the smaller the clothing, usually. Unfortunately this mess has made us think of sizes in a whole new light. By fooling us into thinking we were smaller we now think we have to be! It's insane. If they look good on you it shouldn't matter what the tag says. And 0 should not be a size, lmao! Zero means u dont exist. But it has to be now that they've raised the measurements for other sizes. If shopping wasn't already hard enough, now you DEF have to try everything on, sizes are more guidelines than rules. Remember people are different shapes and sizes, one is not better than the other, being healthy is most important. So dont freak out! lol Your the same size no matter what the jeans say.

BTW This is why I hate shopping for pants, so I feel your pain. ;)

I have pants from Eddie Bauer in three different sizes and they all fit the same. That little size tag is meaningless.
